Role for Body Bagged coins

Over the years have gone from any Dahlonega mint coin then to high grade then to condition census then to rare varieties, etc. But nice attractive D mint coins have gotten very, very difficult to find so was thinking about assembling a visually attractive but, impaired set in a Capitol plastic holder...primarily for fun and something to do. Plus these coins could actually be touched. Some coins would be tooled, wiped, whizzed, cleaned, etc. but could be visually appealing without a magnifying glass if carefully selected. Also, probably doable for 35-50% of an equivalently graded certified set. Has anyone done this in their favorite series...was it enjoyable?

Yes and I call them three legged dogs. In my second set of IHC's I am working on I have several that have been lightly cleaned or recolored. They are well struck and colorful but wouldn't pass muster at the grading companies. They look terrific in the green album, in fact when I am showing off my coins these get more compliments then the slabbed cents. I have even cracked them out of holders when it was apparent to me that they had been messed with but the grading companies slabbed them anyway. I had a 77 in a red 66 holder that I could tell was recolored and cracked out for my album and it looks great.

OK, I lied about the 77.image
  • Sounds like a great idea Bid D! I guess the closest thing to this would be Lord Marcovan's collection of "Holey" coins, but I guess if someone had the means and the patience to gather up a collection of nice rejects at a reasonable price, it would be a neat thing to have.
  • Irish Mike I like calling them 3 legged dogs reminds me of the 3 legged dog who entered the saloon looking for the man who shot 'my paw'.

Should take about three months on ebay to do the whole set. Here's a nice starter coin for ya:

Great idea Dahlonega!! When most people recieve their coins back in a bodybags all they want to do is dump them. That is a great way to enjoy unslabable material.
  • RYK I actually think I see the results of the D on that coin but, man is it ugly...really ugly... any more of those and I might have to put this idea in the trash can.
