How do you submit a proof coin ?

I've got several proof Silver Eagles that I feel would grade well.
Do I need to crack them out of their capsules or do I just send them as is ?

Thanks

  • My understanding is that PCGS will break them out for you!

  • Thanks much ! That's a relief .
I've never cracked out a coin and I can just see
    damaging a possible Proof 70 !!!

Just out of curiosity what year Eagles are you submitting?

  • I've got three 1996 , one 1999, and just got a 2003 which looks fabulous !
  • I have a couple of the 2003's in the velvet boxes and they are beautiful coins. I dont know that I would spend the money to get them slabbed though. I guess they can only gain value over the years though eh?

Um, just exactly WHY would you slab those?

    We ARE watching you.

  • By the way,
I've also got one of each year from 1986 in uncirculated condition.
Not sure if it's worth getting any graded as they didn't cost as
    much as grading cost.
  • why slab one ?
    I saw a 2003 Silver Eagle in a PCGS slab graded PF-70
    selling for $235.
That's about ten times what I paid for mine !

Are you a dealer, or a new collector? Honest question - no sarcasm intended.

  • Not a dealer, John.
As a matter of fact I've never sold a coin in my life.
I've only been collecting for three years, does it show ?

    I know I've got a lot to learn , that's why I'm here.
Just wondering if a coin I just bought that's getting
top dollar in a high grade is worth submitting.

  • It's really a matter of what YOU want Skipper. It's nice to see what others likes and dislikes are, but what do YOU want? It's YOUR coin.
If you really like slabs and like seeing your coins in slabs then that is a reason to send them in. (I love slabs! PCGS only!)
On the PR70 issue it's like playing the lottery. You pay for your ticket (the fees) and if you get a PR70 you are HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY because the value of that coin skyrockets!! But unlike the lottery, even if you "lose" and get a PR69, the coin is still worth a higher premium than the raw specimen and it is in that nice slab, which is a little "time capsule" that will protect it ("Time capsule" - I heard that from someone once and I just love it!!!! Wink, Wink). So you really don't lose out at all. Their are exceptions of course. But it really is a matter of what YOU want and what YOU like!!
  • I have to agree the Proof Silver Eagle does look a lot nicer in the original box.
There's no real hurry to get this one graded and , who knows, maybe PCGS will
figure out a way to grade proof coins (and commems) while preserving the package.

Hey, dreams sometimes come true !
  • Proof Silver Eagles do not have to be cracked out, the capsules open right up! If you dont want to keep the capsule, just send it the way it is. I transfer mine to Airtites, I used to give them the Mint Capsule, but now I keep em!
