1958-D Lincoln huh?

I was rumaging through my coin dealer's junk wheat pennies jar to help my son fill out his thin Whitman album when I stumbled upon a 1958-D cent where the "D" mint mark was almost touching the date. I was getting fairly excited--I thought I'd found my first cherrypick find. However, I found a second one 15 minutes later. Maybe its a common variety? I attatched a picture of a normal 58-D and the two 58-D close dates. Tell me what you think.

I'm not an expert on Lincolns, but I think it's VERY cool that you go coin shopping with your son!!

I lead a coin club for young collectors at my church, and it's one of the most satisfying parts of the hobby for me.

    We ARE watching you.

There are many different dates in which finding mintmarks very close to - or very far from the date are very common. There's no "variety" in having odd placement to a mintmark, the variety occurs when there's doubling to the mintmark or some other part of the coin.
