questions questions. i still have a question about this piece.
besides asking who bought it and how much they payed, i wouldnt expect to have those questions answered ofcourse, i,d like to know how it was deemed authentic by the buyer.
aside from looking at it and weighing it, how could it be authenticated without a geniune piece to compare it with. i wonder if it was compared to the picture of the one from the Smithsonian? i saw the two pics and they sorta look different as far as the surfaces go. probably just an issue of photography but,,,,did the buyer go on what it weighed mostly? thats not even half of the critieria to be checked is it?
maybe it did check in weight and thats all the buyer was concerned about?
...i ask too many questions. its just a very interesting topic to me....sorry
I have not examined this coin, but from what I have heard and read, it is not a genuine 1974 aluminum cent. It weighs too much.
PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows. I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.
Maybe you could check the history of the coin by contacting Coin World which ran a lengthy feature on it in the mid-70's. They might have an archives department that could help you.

Not to mention half, if not all of the nation's security services....

I highly doubt the secert service puts this as a high priority, much more important things to worry about than spec of aluminum. I highly doubt they pay any attention to this form and what us coin rubes are spewing..................

David Hall says PCGS would grade/slab one if it came in, for free, and would not call the SS about it.
Would even authenticate a `64D Peace dollar too, for free, and wouldnt involve the authorities.
...oh really.......even if the coins are deemed illegal? hmmmmm
