Everyone complains about eBay auctions where there is a high starting price calling them "not real auctions". No eBay auctions are real auctions because only silent auctions end at a time. This would make eBay have REAL auctions. DLRC has the same policy and they have no problems with their auctions. Kudos to eBay for working with its sellers for once and not against them. Edited to add, oops WAY old thread

So, a silent auction isn't an auction? Then why do they call it an auction??
Ebay sees snipping as another bid thus higher realized prices increasing revenue. If they thought it hampered bids they would disallow it. Yes Yahoo had the 15 minute extension rule as a elective option, but I dont see how this caused yahoo to lose out to traffic to Ebay.

An auction requires bids to be called, a tradition for 400 or so years ingrained into most laws concerning what is or is not an auction. Silent bids, sealed bids, ebay, Teletrade and such are not auctions in the legal sense, and are usually referred to as "mail bid sales"

<< <i>As a buyer, I only snipe. As a seller, I don't worry too much about it cuz I know most of the activity is going to take place in the last 15 minutes. If I'm dumb enuff to lose a lot of money, I shoulda put a reserve on it, or started it out higher. I say leave it the way it is >>
Exactly, I have always viewed Ebay as 6 days 23 hours and 45 minutes of advertising with 15 minutes of bidding. Auctions easily double in this time period.
I get a real high when I snipe, no kidding. I always bid the highest I will pay within the last 5-10 seconds. Usually I win, but if I don't, I have no regrets. If I couldn't snipe, I wouldn't bid.

<< <i>Ebay could also be changed so that no sellers cancel auctions during the last 12 hours.
As you said - Won't happen. >>
This policy is already in effect.
