Do you think this Ike Could Upgrade?

I saw this really nice Ike on David Lawrence Site and wondered if anyone thought it might upgrade to MS67 as suggested on the David Lawrence site. It looks to me like it is really nice, but I had zero out of 20 on the last upgrade attempt I had with PCGS. Any comments?http://www.davidlawrence.com/coins/viewcoin.cfm?Inventory=79072Link

  • It looks a little dull to me for a 67

Edit:Too many fine dings on jawline, neck, and eagle's breast: kind of hard to tell, though. I definitely like it at 66, though

Charlie, Depending on the luster I do believe that Ike has a healthy shot to upgrade. Little to no chatter on the cheek and super smooth fields lead the way to the MS67 grade.
Good eye as finding these in MS67 add much to the price tag!
  • Charlie,
The coin is really beautiful but IMHO is almost impossible an upgrade. In MS67 the pop is only 2.
I'm not an Ike specialist, but this coin in MS67 reaches $10.000 easy. I suggest that you send a PM to Segoja and ask to him.
I believe that if the coin really had the condition of being upgraded, the dealer would already have tried the jackpot.image

  • Usual caveats about a photo, but...

It looks like a nice coin, but also kind of dull, which may mean that heavy toning is what makes the surfaces look clean.

As an upgrade candidate, I'd also be worried about the strike, it looks like the back of Ike's head and one of the eagle talon's are mushy.

Theoretically a coin is supposed to be fully struck to garner any gem grade. That doesn't always happen with market grading, but PCGS has put some MS67-clean Ikes of mine in MS64 holders several times before I gave up. They were 71-D and 72-D as well. Those dates often come quite clean but not fully struck, probably in part because of the low-relief that year.

Only one way to find out, good luck if you try! image

You absolutely cannot make that determination from a scan, you need to see the coin. Even if the real coin looks great, it is almost impossible to get a 67 for that date. As suggested, if it could 67 it already would have!!

If you buy it, make sure you can return it. The price is very premium. Should be able to get a good one for under $300. If you can't send me a PM as I could help image.

If you do buy it look for luster. Unless an IKE has blazing luster or killer colors, 67 is almost out of the question. From the scan, that looks like the problem. Then look for any small marks on the rims, neck line, and eagle wing high points. Those are killer hits. Finally as Supercoin suggested, check the strike. Once you submit it, it can't be returned. So, you are out grading fees plus the premium price. It might be worth it to pay a premium for a great just miss coin, but I think the quality pictured is available for less.

The chance of an upgrade to 67 is about 5% IMHO. I would not try it myself, even though this is a great date.

Every Ike expert here speak from wisdom and experience so I differ to their judgement. Via the photo though, that is the cleanest MS66 I've seen. I've only seen two MS67's (both 71-D's) and although the luster was booming and the strike (somewhat) full, they had a mark or two more in the fields than this one is showing. I still say it is a shot coin but probably not a "healthy" one as I stated above.
  • By way of reference, here's what a fully-struck 71-D (same dies as 72-D) looks like, and what you better have if you're going for MS67, in my opinion.

Compare Ike's hair, eagle talons, outer edges of lower eagle wing.

Again, just going by the photo... sometimes toning makes it tough to get details to show up in a photo.
