Grading services THAT different ?

Last night I was looking at Morgans on a better dealer's website.
There were two coins, same year and mint, one was PGCS MS-63 ,
the other NGC MS-65. The NGC cost $400 , the PCGS $500 !

Are PCGS graded coins that are two grades lower than the
next competitor actually worth more ?
This isn't the first time I've seen this happen.

I'm hoping PCGS doesn't get so elitist that the little guy can no longer
afford their service.

Any thoughts ?

Need to see the two coins. Seems like an extreme example, but there are plenty of pcgs only collectors that only buy pcgs slabbed coins, and some dealers really prey on that thinking.
My initial answer to your question "Are PCGS graded coins that are two grades lower than the
next competitor actually worth more ?" Would be a straight out NO.
Again, you have to show both coins to make any judgements.

Aside from bulk submissions, their service cost pretty much the same for little guys and big guys alike.

  • Skipper,
Was the PCGS MS63 a PL or DMPL?
  • Sorry folks,
I haven't been able to download pictures of the coins but ,
I swear there seems to be a major difference in price between
    PCGS and NGC coins.

Oh and Mintluster, they weren't PL or DM coins.

There were also two Morgans of same year and grade by both services.
    1891-0 ms-64. NGC's price: $625. PCGS price : $790.

I found these at David Lawrence Rare Coins and they can be viewed.
From the images the NGC looked like the better coin.

I'm sure there must be a good explanation but at the moment,
    I am confused.

    Thanks all, Skipper
  • With Morgans, I've found that PCGS coins are a bit higher priced, but not as much as that!

The 1891-O Morgan is a funny coin. Some examples that have great lustre, very few marks, and an OK strike on the obverse, have a reverse strike on the eagle's breast that is so horrible it looks like somebody scraped the coin back and forth on the sidewalk.

I can testify from multiple personal experiences, that an MS64 NGC coin which fits this description will NOT grade MS64 at PCGS.

I'd have to compare the coins. If the coin graded MS63 had more eye appeal than the one graded MS65, I'd consider paying more for the one with the most eye appeal even if it had received a lower grade. It just depends on the coin.
