What's the grade on this Walker??

I picked this one up at a local dealer today. Only a common date 1942, but I also looked at several PCGS MS65's, and this raw coin looked better. I'm thinking at least 65 maybe more... Almost zero chatter - zilch, nada, very strong strike, and great luster, which the scan washes out. I paid $110. Am I deluding myself?

I hate to say it, but I think there's a rub on the left arm and breast...

It's either a very weak strike on the obverse, or it's an AU coin.

    Where's the scan?
  • It doesn't strike me as unc., maybe 55

AU58. The breast, the face and the hand look like rub. Same on the leading edge of the eagle!

I agree with the assessments above. You seemed to have purchased a perfect slider. See if you can return that coin.

OK. I'll take it back. Not convinced of the rub though. I need to compare it closely to the slabs again.

For some reason, my scanner makes things look out of focus.

Looks like their are luster breaks on the breast and the drapery that crosses the waist, both are high spots on the coin. Scanners do a lousy job of capturing that dripping with luster look and may disguise what could be a weak strike. I would err on the side of caution.

I only have a few of these series, but I agree with the others (the pros).....first thing to catch my eye on your scans was the rub on her breast.
The breasts didn't seem as full as they should be, but rather, rubbed a bit.

PS....looks like a nice coin if you paid the right amount for it, but, it does appear that at $100, you paid a bit much for it. Good choice to take it back I think.

I agree also, with an AU-58 grade. Looks like a rub on the breasts. Slightly different color gives it away.
  • I agree with the rubbing on the breast and the left arm. What about the hit on/above the B?

You are doing well, subject 15837. You are a good person.
  • Along with everybody else...the left breast of Liberty and middle skirt lines look like some rub, the thumb is mushy, and the eagle's breast looks like rub (too weak for a P mint)...looks like a bunch of sliders I recently upgraded in my short set. I'm calling AU 55-58

Would really need to see coin in hand to look at the luster though.

I think AU55 is Waaaaaay low on this coin

I give it AU59 at least, and in hand probably has AU61 eye appeal all day long, if the luster is flashy like you say, and it looks pretty crunchy to me, that's a scan, right, not a digipic? you have to read a scan differently. tiny rub at the highpoints, but, a nice coin if you can get it at the right price.

I agree $110 is too much, but probably easily worth a third of that and maybe half. jmho

If the seller is a local dealer I would try to make him come clean and give you a partial refund. I say partial because you should keep this coin as a pretty good slider to learn from. After a while you will be able to just glance at it and see what folks on here are talking about.

Like I said, I'm not sure it's a slider. The scan washes out a lot of detail. But I am taking it back, and there won't be any issues. The dealer is an old friend.

Here is a 1945 graded AU55 by PCGS for comparison.

I need a different camera for these coins. This may not be good enough to compare.

  • Yup, AU58 it is

I concur with AU-55 to a low possibility of AU-58. The reverse looks better and might have passed for 60/61. But then again, the obverse tells the whole story. At these levels the luster is important in deciding between 55 and 58 and i can't be sure from the scan.
