What is the largest hoard of silver or gold you have heard of (not including the Hunt brothers from Texas who tried to take over the silver market)?

The Hunt brothers don't count - they never had a hoard of the metal, just lots of paper that said they owned the metal.

How much did Warren Buffet have? I think it was a huge amount. Silver went up to $7 an ounce and he leased it all out at high interest rates.

Uncle Sam and other foreign governments. Someone posted a neat story regarding the use of silver in the Manhattan project (I think 15,000 TONS of silver).

The largest rumored hoard of precious metals is in the "big vault" which is located at a secret location in the southwestern US. Access to the "big vault" can be obtained only by graduates of Coin Dealer's University (CDU). I have heard that there is an Olympic-size swimming pool that is part of the "big vault" complex that is filled to overflowing with no-name silver rounds and ingots. The CDU graduates like to dive into the pool much like Uncle Scrooge likes to dive into his money bin.

I would say that the largest "hoard" of gold is held in Ft Knox. I am not sure if it qualifies, but the gold there is certainly not going anywhere in the forseeable future. We are not on any metal standard, so I am not certain why the government continues to hold this gold. It is not being used for the production of coins.
