SPECTACULAR PRICES ON LINCOLNS TONIGHT ON TELETRADE

I noticed some of the closing prices on the Lincoln cent auction tonight just before it closed tonight. Some really spectacular prices all across the board, wheat and Memorial.

Anybody buy any?

    Mitch,

I went up strong on that 27-S, and got blown away. Can't believe what that 17-D was pulling, with this big ol' fingerprint in the obverse field.

I came away empty handed. Guess Hall's right: Lincolns are still "nuclear!"

  • I have no idea!!!! I was clicking in bids as fast as I could and the auction closed as my browser was refreshing. I have no idea what lots I won, if any as each time I got back to the screen I had been outbid. I was in on the 17-D in 66RD at $10,500 and the 27-S at about the same. I wanted the 1919 in 68 but $7800 was a bit much especially with the scratch on the reverse. I was in on about 5 other lots as it closed. I can't wait to check!!!

Jack--hmmm. I had my eye on the same three! By the time sniping time came around, though, the 17-D and the 1919 had gone beyond what I was willing to pay.

  • I feel like I just got done running a race!!!!

Yes - incredible money on the 17(d). I had the pleasure of lot viewing the collection a few days ago. That 1919(p) was a spectacular coin IMHO and whomever won it will treasure it long after the memory of its cost. image

  • David,
Can you snipe on teletrade? I mean with one of those programs? I just keep clicking until it won't take my bid any longer.

I didnt bid on a thing. Did anybody get a flyer in the mail from Teletrade on the auction? I got one, and the color "pictures" were so bad, you couldnt tell a RD coin from a BN one... seriously.

I had bid on a 1931-S MS66, and last time I looked it was over two grand. (that's way above my bid).

Any chance some of those bids were reserves or TT bids? Why do coins in their sales often bring 10-20% over current market, even when not that nice??? Hhmmmm.

  • Mitch,
How can you view the lots? Do you have to go to the home office or will they send some in the mail like Heritage used to do? I wish I could have viewed them in person.
  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,974 ✭✭✭✭✭
JTK: By appointment. I never ever lot viewed before. But, now that they have moved to S CA. I will plan on doing it from time to time.

  • Mitch,
Do you think the 17 in 66RD was an upgrade? It looked that way from the image and the bidding went to around $4300.

    Jack,

Can't program-snipe so far as a know (There was a thread about this not too long ago). I just meant the old classic snipe like: wait as long as you dare, put in your max bid, and let 'er rip.

    David,

I got the flyer, but I'd been looking at the coins on the site for awhile. The pics were hard to see all you wanted to see. That did cause me to pull in my horns a bit. Mitch says the 1919 was spectacular; it looked OK in the pic, but the pic didn't signal spectacular like Mitch's hands-on was apparently able to confirm.

The pics obviusly didn't inhibit some folks, though!

I'll have to say, I'd kind of lost interest in Teletrade for awhile there. They've sure been coming on strong with the Lincolns ehre lately though, haven't they? I know that some folks have special deals with Teletrade, but I still wonder why a coin that warrents these prices weren't held for the big show auctions--at least I wondered until I saw these prices! image

Even so, I didn't place one bid on it. When I looked at 6:45 p.m. and it wasalready $8360 with commish, I didn't want to spend $9,000+ for the pop 14/1 coin. But, on a different night I may have well pulled the trigger. I do not believe the winner (whoever that was) will regret that purchase.

JTK: The 1917 was very, very nice.

  • Regardless of any lots won, I must say that the last ten minutes was kind of fun!!image

  • Just checked and I won the 17-D and the 30-D in 67RD (NGC). I'm a little bummed as I was really hammering on several other lots that I wanted as well. I'm just hoping to get 66 on crossover for the 30-D.
  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,974 ✭✭✭✭✭
JTK: I think you will really like the 30(d) and IMHO you have absolutely no problem achieving your minimum grade of 66RD.

  • Does anyone know who the "Gentleman" was/is? Stewart????
  • well I bought several coins with little resistance. in fact the 29-s I bought caught me buy surprise.
it went for 240$ and is much nicer than that. oh yea it's a lincoln.

and I won't tell ya what other lincolns I bought but they were a steal and i'm sandbagging for the ngc set awards at the end of the year.

    lol, hehehe.
may the force be with you.

    "Wow" is right - nearly $7k for a 1909(svdb) in 65RD! Close to $15k for a 27(s) in 65RD; even close to $5k for a 1916(d) in NGC-MS65RD!! Memorials were wild as well - nearly $4k each for a 1959(p) and 60(p) SD in MS67RD. Not to mention nearly $5k for a RB 1912(s) in MS66!

There is a no questions asked return privilege with TT (for something like 3%). I wonder if this played into the bidding in any way? image

    mitch,

What did you buy? Are you telling?

  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,974 ✭✭✭✭✭
Stewart: My most favorite coin in the sale, hands down, was the 1913(s) Lincoln in PCGS-MS65RD. I won the coin for a fraction of my max bid. I like the chances of the coin upgrading to MS66RD and the coin is technically a solid MS66RD. With a non-flattering scan I was surprised the coin realized $8,360. Whether it upgrades is, obviously, another story, but I figured this coin has a value of around $10k - $15k even as a super "PQ" MS65RD. Now, I told you mine. How about telling us your favorite coin in the sale image

I used to check Teletrade occasionally for Lincolns, but never saw any good ones so I stopped checking, and missed this auction! Boy, I'm glad I didn't miss out on anything I would have wanted. I would have maybe been interested in ms64rd coins, maybe 16-s,18-s,23-s and others, but they seemed terrible from the descriptions and images. Many seemed to have brown toning or absolutely terrible strikes (look at that 23-s!!). Is the grading on these accurate? Are there that many overgraded coins? Does this hurt the Lincoln market? How can set registry rankings mean anything with either so many overgraded coins, or such differences in quality? A 64rd 18-s for $450 here, and $4000 something in some Heritage auction last spring. What a difference. If these are all overgraded coins, how can the top two services be that ridiculously bad? If so I've completely lost all faith in both ngc and pcgs.

I picked up a couple of Proof Memorials to upgrade my Registry Set. It was an interesting mix. There were some stellar prices and then some not-so-stellar prices. I think this supports the current theory that the high end market is as strong as ever, while the common/non-condition census material is very soft.
