Do All Morgan Dollars Have a VAM Number?

RampageRampage Posts: 9,512 ✭✭✭✭✭
For example, I know there are some dates/MM with many different varieties. Are all dates/MM assisgned a number even if they are not a so-called "variety"?

Thanks.

Richard.

I believe every known die pair has a VAM number.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Yes, every Morgan has a "VAM" number, which is an Obverse/Reverse DIE pairing. VAM-1 is considered to be the "normal die" while a VAM-1A (for example) is a different stage of the same die.

VAM numbering restarts with each year and mintmark. So 1880-P has say 40 VAMS, numbered 1-40; while 1880-O has say 32 VAMs; numbered again 1-32.

  • Thanks for the info. I always wondered about VAMs and was unsure exactly what it meant.

    Thanks Wolf and Kranky.

    Wolf, your explanation helped allot.

    Greatly appreciated.
  • And from what I understand new discoveries are occassionally made which results in a new VAM number.

They've coming out all the time. The hardest part is keeping up with all the new numbers not to mention the RENUMBERING. Cripes!!

Now this is a question I can appreciate, unlike the "Is this a Morgan a VAM?"

... with one exception that I know of. The 1878 varieties are so extensive (numbering over two hundred) that the reverse design types have been assigned blocks of numbers. Why? So new discoveries can be added while maintaining a logical grouping of types with a proper number sequence.
