buying "unopened" early box proof sets on eBay, like the one I won tonight? I know it is a bit late to ask, seeing as I already won it but I wonder if anyone has had any negative experiences (like re-sealed) boxes that were not really "unopened"...

Just never open it and you'll never have a problem!

eBay, the loaves and fishes of "unopened" proof sets.

With Val, though, it's likely to be really unopened. But, you can bet he spot checks batches he gets in. He's been around a long, long time and nobody knows more about detecting the possibility of winners in a sealed set than he does.

Proof sets came in little boxes in 1954. I would think that it would be fairly easy to detect one that had been resealed.

I thought that the envelopes containing early proof sets were shipped open. The boxes they were sent in were sealed, of course.

Sorry uofa1285, I didn't realize you were talking about a 50's set. I was thinking about the little brown envelopes. Best of luck if you crack the packaging!

The materials used in the 1950-55 boxed proof sets often negatively affects the coins. You may be disappointed when you open the set.

Yup, the little cellophane envelopes the coins are in are stapled together. Often the staple rusts and messes up the coins. We have 2 and they are OK. I am always curious to see what is there and would probably open it...

how are you going to enjoy the coins if they are in a box or envelope. the only 50s proof set I've ever seen are in these 6 coin plastic things.
