Grading 1973 Candy lids

Same centering criteria? [Most seem to be oc to one degree or another.] What about the crease where the tab meets the lid? Automatic '5' at best? What about another crease on the tab? They all appear to have a pin sized 'nick' on the left side in the same place. How much chipping is allowed on the back? Any help/thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg

  • I have a very nice looking 1962 Football Buck of Fran Tarkinton that I was told would not grade higher because of the crease. I have had 1955 double headers that were graded 7's, and they had been folded. It is anyone's guess. There are probably some lids out there that were never used, and therefore never folded. Centering is a very big issue with these.
  • This is a great question. I have often wondered myself, especially since I've recently gotten more into the oddball cards, what a crease or other "standard" characteristic of any given card would do to the grade if, in general, the card (or lid, disc, etc.) was normally issued with this characteristic "flaw".

By grading standards, the card should be downgraded. Although, logically, it should not be since it was produced and issued in this manner. I would tend to believe that any of the Topps Candy Lids without the bent tab (i.e. crease) are not truly representative of the product as it was issued.

Although a little off topic, what started me thinking about this a long time ago was PSA/DNA graded cards. Theoretically, how can any of these cards not have the MK qualifier? If you did not get the autograph authenticated through DNA first, would the card get the MK qualifier if graded?

Just some thoughts. If anyone has any info on any specific oddball issue, or PSA/DNA, I'd be interested to know their experiences with it.

    Thanks.
