So I wrote on my Mickey Mantle card....

....and PSA again wouldn't slab it!

Some of you have seen an earlier post where I spoke of how my 1965 Topps Mickey Mantle card was so beat up, I thought that writing on it wouldn't hurt the grade (someone had already written on it anyways). How could you get lower than a PSA 1, right? Well, we saw a football checklist get a PSA 1 (MK). I think that this card would have gotten the same grade, but after two submissions, PSA still has not slabbed the card. And they don't give real a reason except that sometimes cards are so beat up, they just don't grade them. Well, I have seen cards worse off than this (without my comments written on them, of course) get graded. So I wonder if the grader is a Yankees fan???

Well, judge for yourself. Do you think that it should (could) have been slabbed?

Here is the card:

And yes, I know that the Red Sox lost, so no one has to be a smart-a$$ and remind me.

  • it is not profane
    and
the card is NOT that beat up.
(I have seen much worse get a 2)

    PSA should grade this card
or AT LEAST give you a better reason!

I would ask PSA to at least give it an "Authentic" only
grade and slab it... or I think I would send it to GAI
(or SGC or BGS) to get it slabbed somehow.

It is too cool and too funny not to get in a slab.

dude, that stinks! when i heard about the card, i was so excited to see it in a psa slab and was hoping it would go to ebay. i think the MK in this case would've earned it a huge premium.

First off, the card is hilarious! Second, why in the heck would you WANT to grade it? Finally, the RedSox are going to kick the Yankees arse in 2004.

    Hey!

Why don't you get it slabbed by PRO! I'm sure they'll do it!

(of course there will always be a question on whether this card was trimmed or not...)image

    Good one.
  • Awesome card. Wanna sell it? I had one even worse when I was a kid that introduced me to shortcard collecting. I traded a bunch of cards to some kid I knew because Mantle's name rang a bell. This was around 1975 when I was only 8 years old.

When I got home I asked my mother if Mickey Mantle was any good (Dad was still at work). She laughed in my face image

Needless to say my mother wasn't June Cleaver. God only knows what I ended up doing with that card but if I had it today I would slab it for sentimental reasons.

On your card, my guess is PSA won't slab a PSA 1 card with a qualifier of PSA 1 (MK)? At least I've never seen one. Maybe the profanity is holding them back?

BKAH - I've never seen a PSA 2 even remotely close to this bad. If they exist...it's a crime and we should all stop buying PSA cards!!!

  • I may be wrong, but do you think the handwritten "Yankees Suck" might have PSA a little nervous about their public image if this card did get slabbed? I have not read all of the legal small print on the submission form in a while (or the website for that matter). I would not be surprised if they did have something in writing that anything offensive (although this is pretty tame) would not be encapsulated. After all, the card in a PSA holder, does have some impact on PSA's reputation.

Just a thought. It would be cool to have it graded, though.

    Yankees Suck!

    Go Marlins!

I'm sure I'll get slammed for that, considering the 6-0 pounding the Marlins are currently receiving.

    JEB.

  • I am seriously considering scratching out the verbiage and resubmitting. Then I think Virtualizard would be correct. He brings up a very valid point, even though I have never seen anything in the fine print.

I wonder if they would grade the card if I wrote "Pro Grading Sucks" on it. image

  • BKAH,

What's the story behind getting that one graded? There's got to be one.

How about a new qualifier: PSA 1 (VL)
This grade is given to cards exhibiting vulgar language. Unlike the other qualifiers, it can, in an appropriate case, be given to a Gem Mint card. Watch for the PSA 10 (VL) 1989 Fleer Billy Ripken variation cards, coming soon to a dealer near you. image
