How did this get so toned??

This is either a neat toned quarter or the ugliest coin you have ever seen.. but the question I have for you experts is how did a coin so young(1998) get this color. My grandson found this in his change and gave it to me, which is great, that means he is looking at coins with interest rather then for the next candy barimage

    I don't think this was done intentionally because it was given in change at the local grocery store, but obviously it was enclosed in something - just thought you might have some idea as to what might have caused it. Thanks

    It looks like it may have gotten wet, and sat on something rusty. Just a guess though.
