I saw that too. I'm pretty sure it was the KING. What was so funny was the way he asked Joe Orlando at the Registry Luncheon. He was so serious. Then everyone was quiet for a few seconds before bursting out with laughter.
To set the record straight during the Q and A part of the luncheon......I asked Joe..."Is there any truth to the rumor that PSA will be giving beer credits for large submissions"???
Joe Orlando's reply was .."I don't think so..."
Dead silence............then the members busted out with laughter..
I think any member that groups together a pile of business for PSA should get at least a beer or two..(or three...hee..hee...)
On PSA's behalf...They did feed all of us, and had an open bar...Yum!!! Even Riccaboni commented on the delicous cheescake...
Anyway...It looks like I'm famous now. My quote ended up in a magazine..
Cheers!!
Larry

I'll have you know that Crown was purchased from the finest "Party Depot" store in the Kingdom. It was also adorned with a 1970 Kellogg's Ernie Banks supplied by THEGEMMINTMAN. Somewhere in the past posts is a picture of this "high quality" solid gold (not really, gold foil paper I think) headress...

That cheesecake was INCREDIBLE. Running it off the next morning was not however .
As for the beer credits, I'd be a larger supporter myself for free grading submissions for fairly obvious reasons, for health, monitary, and age concerns. I did however burst out laughing completely when I read the quote, remembering the moment when it ocurred. My brother just stared at me wondering what was that funny coming from a sports magazine.
Anyhow, school work calls once again, best wishes,
Over the years many of you have probably wondered what it must be like to work at a major convention like the annual National Sports Collectors Convention. Well,at the time or this writing,we had just returned from the big show and I am exhausted!
Monday - We leave at 9am PST only to arrive at 10:30 PM EST.As I enter the hotel,I notice a man wearing am extra medium T-shirt that says "My Biological Didn't Bother - Darth Maul is my Father" - Yes at this point ,ther is no doubt that I am at a card convention.
Tuesday - Our Crew spends the entire day putting the finishing touches on our booth. The room must be 120 degress and it's humid.Thank the Lord I I brought 17 pairs of underwear. It's VIP night - a night where collectors can pay extra to catch an early glimpse of the show. The most interesting night occured when Gene Simmons of the rock band Kiss came by our booth and asked one of our reps for a new SMR.I couldn't believe it - Gene Simmons asking for an SMR - Who knew?
(Joe - Gene Simmons loves money.Think me may be looking for KISS cards in the SMR??? And think of a guy who owns the Pattent on Monopoly money.Everytime a Monoply game is sold Gene gets a cut. )
Wednesday - Cards have been steadily coming in and we have already graded a 1954 Bowman Ted Williams and 1949 Jackie Robinson in Mint 9 - two early highlights.Early that evening ,I ventured down to the hotel exercise room where I found a man on the treadmill eating a ham sandwich and smoking a cigarette - yes,I'm at a card show.
Thursday - The show is officially opened to the public and we are swamped! Those Lebron James cards (produced by Upper Deck) are flowing in by the hundreds alone.Thank you Upper Deck. That evening,we had a meeting with some of our authorized dealers .We received some solid feedback on how to make PSA a better place and showed off some of our new ticket and Turkey Redinet holders. The dealers were very excited and helpful.
Friday - Today PSA put on a Set Registry Luncheon for over 100 collectors.Collectors came in from around the country and we discussed some serious issues and had a great time. The quote of the day came from one of our collectors who said (with a straight face mind you),"Can PSA give us beer credits as an award?"After a slight delay,we all laughed but I am still wondering if he was serious - you never know.
Saturday - Today I spent the first part of the show explaining grading to a new submitter. He was wondering why a creased card could not be an "8." It's always a shock to new submitters - how grading has changed so much since the 1980's.If a card looked like it retained a square shape - it was Mint in 1985.I know you guys remember those days.
Sunday - The show is now comming to an end.We graded nearly 10,000 cards on-site - a tremendous figure for on-site grading. Our PSA/DNA autograph team was equally busy with there authentication service. We met a lot of great people, did some television and radio interviews and worked really hard to service a lot of enthusiastic collectors and dealers.
