http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2197478733&category=525 It's an interesting way of offering this Gallery Mint item. Mix and match it with other, low grade authentic Bust quarters and maybe no one will notice (?)! image

The 96 has different looking obverse, Braddick do you think "copy" is on the reverse?------------BigE

It is most common for the Gallery Mint to place the word COPY on the reverse, in the clouds, below the Eagle. My guess is COPY has been buffed off but taletell signs of it will remain for the decerning eye.

  • It is definitely a Gallery Mint piece. The genuine 1796 quarters come from two obverse dies, one with the 9 higher than the 6 the other with a low 9. The coin in question has a low 9. On the genuine low 9 the first two stars on the left are almost touching each other. On the GMM copy the stars are well seperated. The stars on the coin in the auction are well seperated. (On the genuine, high 9 coin those stars are very close as well but not as close as on the low 9. And they are closer than that seen on a GMM copy or this auction coin.)

The Gallery Mint is an interesting operation. It produces truly neat coins. But I bet that collectors in future years will curse it because they will be bedeviled by instances such as what Braddick found.
