1980 BB , No. 1..Up for sale ???

I see that on ebay, a fellow collector / board member, Robebass, has his top set on the registry up for auction. About two days to go, as I just checked the 1980s today for the first time in about a week.

I casually collect the 80 set, and have bought or traded at least once with Rob, and do find this kind of a surprise. His set was the leader by a pretty good margin, needs only about 45 cards to finish, and has an average a bit over 9.

Rob : How come you're selling, what made you decide not to try to complete the 726 card monster ???

Other posters : Is the asking price ( open bid ) of 25K a bit much ? 1980 is considered by some to be the last year of " Vintage " Last year only one major company set and thus only one rookie card, last year before BB had real labor problems, last year Topps had no real concern about quality control because of no competetion, Etc. Regardess of your frame of reference for "vintage", what might a similar set from the late 60s be worth ? From the early 60s ?? From the 50s ?? Just curious as slowly more graded sets come up for auction.

  • Larry,

    Here is the auction.

I think both the starting bid and BIN are outrageous, but you never know. I think that is what Rob is hoping for. Hey, I got lucky (or not - depending on how you look at it) with the sale of my 1969 and 1970 sets. For the record, my 1970 set at almost 99% complete and GPA of 8.07 sold for a bit over half of what Rob is asking for his 1980 set. I can't imagine anyone paying this much, but, like I said before, I really didn't expect my 1970 set to sell for what it did.

    Best of luck, Rob.

    JEB.
  • Good luck Rob

I hope somebody bites for you at that price, it will nearly pay off your hospital bills.

Good luck, Rob. It will definitely be hard to find someone wanting to spend $25K on a 1980 set. It seems to me that the value is in breaking it up, but like others have said, you gotta lay down the 5 bucks to see what bites.

Ok.I avoided going on the board and announcing this but since it's here now I guess I'll clue everyone in.

Will the set sell at this price??? I don't know but if it does then I'll be able to cover some problems that life has recently dealt me.

I was attacked by a dog about a month ago and got my hand torn up pretty badly, hospitalized, physical therapy and bills that could ruin my life. Also,I might need surgery on my hand if all the range of motion can't come back in therapy. Also, being a self employed musician I have lost 50% of my income and probably won't be doing any work for a few more months.

Mainly, the set was put up there just to see if anyone would be intereted in finishing it but if not the set is destin to be broken up.

I have received several emails and a few Phone calls from collectors who have interest in singles. However,it would be nicer if someone could take on the project and complete it since it's so close to being finished.

I've contemplated with myself keeping the 10s the Yankees,Team cards,etc.. but those examples seem to be the ones folks seem to be the most interested in.

It sucks but sometimes you have no choice to take care of lifes little curveballs.

    Rob,
I hope whichever way your set goes, you'll do ok. A very nice e-bay presentation I might add.
Best of luck in the curve ball department, my friend.

All the best....I hope things get better for you real fast.

I will send you a private message regarding some cards from the set.

Thanks for the wishes everyone.Things are much better than before, although I still have a long way to go for rehab.I just pray to God that no surgery is required and the physical therapy will bring things back to the norm within time.If you don't have a strong stomach then don't click here.

Right now the bills are just starting to pile up and there is this new thing where the hospitals and doctors don't accept letters of protection so I have to cough up some cash,or I'm going to be in a lot of trouble.Espically when I haven't seen the hand specialist yet to add to the financial end of things.

Therefore,it's unfortunate that all the hard work has to be sacrificed and the set will be mostlikely broken up so everyone who's emailed and so on,feel free to check off anything that your interested in,make offers or whatever.Heh.Feel free to meet the opening bid and I'll drive the thing out to you.image
In addition to this set up on the auction block,I have about 82 PSA 8s on the vintage forum that I'd like to sell as a lot if anyone has any interest. That batch comes to just under $3 a card delivered.

Also, part of the reason I didn't mention all this before was because I was afraid to be hammered over my asking price on the set and really didn't want to have to go through explaining this whole mess.I hate crying the blues but sometimes your hand is forced to do things and your left no choice. Thanks for NOT hitting me over the head with a sledge hammer.image

The thing that really sucks is that this set will probably be broken up and probably no longer on the Registry unless I retire it,or someone with deep pockets has the ability to make the project continue to what it's capable of being.I hope nobody will hold it against me that I'm probably going to retire the set soon and collect a few awards so I can have at least something to remember the work, time and effort of my alltime favorite set I collected as a kid.

  • Rob,

You've got great comments up next to your cards. Your set has to be one of the most interesting to read through!

Sorry to hear of your medical situation. As a fellow guitar player, I can sypathize with your plight. Hopefully the owner of the dog is known and you can sue them to offset the medical costs. Best of luck with your set and your rehabilitation.

  • Rob- Good Luck. I wish you the best in your recovery and I'm sure you'll get some top dollars when you sell the set in singles.

    Thanks everyone.

What do you think I should do?

There are a few people who have interest in many of the same cards and I don't want to piss anyone off. Some offered more than others, some asked for what they want early on that I am either friends with or deal with on a regular basis as well as some new folks.

I'm not really in the mood to list all the cards on ebay but I'm thinking it may be best to let everyone decide by placing a bid just to make it fair for everyone to have a chance at what they want.

I guess nomatter where you turn someone somewhere is not going to be happy.I wish to make this easy on myself, give everyone a chance and not step on toes.

    RobE-
Just curious, but was the dog yours? If not, does the dog belong to an individual that you know of? If so, does the guy have a homeowners policy? If so, you are in luck. Under everyones homeowners insurance, liability is provided for negligence. Your bills and loss of income can be recovered under this. Call your attorney and have him do the work for you.

Shane, thanks to a good attorney and a good friend of this board I have the situation under control on the legal end.The dog owner does have insurance but it's going to be at least a year and a half before this case is complete and the hospital and doctors around these parts don't give a rats ass about the fact that they will be eventually paid.Nobody accepts letters of protection and it doesn't matter even if they do.About 2 years ago I had an MRI bill that was a part of a car accident lawsuit that was just wrapping up and the bill still went into a collection agency, they froze a mortgage payment and I had to pay court fees as well as lose money in the bank despite the suit coming to a close. It damaged my credit report and I had to fight to get back to A-1 credit.I'm not about to go through all that again.

I'm already getting threats from the hospital that they won't hesitate to fight me and it's only been a little over a month since this took place.

On a good note however, this is an open and shut case but it's still going to be a year and a half minimum before it's resolved and the doctors and therapists are still willing to treat me.

    Rob-
That's okay if it takes a year or so. The insurance company can and will pay up the fees up front and then once they settle they will write you a supplemental check.
Anyway, I hope that the hand gets back to normal.

So far they have not been a happy and cooperative insurance company.
I wasn't going to file a suit but then this situation kept getting uglier.
