what card has your spouse bought for you that you would never sell.

my wife bought me a 1965 topps set in nr mint to mint condition on our first christmas. we were married in november and a month later under the tree was the set. since then she has bought me a 68 and 69 set. my father-in-law has collected since the 50's and my wife was around it her whole life. these sets will never be graded or sold but i have upgraded a few cards recently.

    king,

no sisters but she does have a ugly cousinimage

her dad has every set from 52 thru 80. and a lot of baseball memoribillia. the coolest one is a tris speaker ball autographed twice. he was an athletic director in college and high school and is a scout for the pittsburg pirates. he has picked a lot of stuff over the years.

My wife is STARTING to learn a little about the cards... Although at this years Nationals she was helping me dig through raw 71's for submission to PSA and she thought I was picking on her because I only bought about 10% of the ones that she picked out!

She knows not to buy me cards and I know not to buy her clothes or shoes....

For my birthday last year, my girlfriend who knows nothing about cards, bought me a Carlton Fisk jersey card #'d out of 100. The reason she bought it was because the # is 27, which is my birthday. Pretty savvy on her part.

Oh, I just wanted to add, that it was a direct result of that gift that I got back into collecting cards. I went online to figure out what the card was and I discovered the whole phenomenon of card grading. I then sent in some of my old cards to PSA and have been hooked ever since.

My wife buys me a card each year for Christmas. She bought me a couple 1954 Dandee PSA 8 cards that I needed for my set one year. In 1999, she bought me a pair of cowboy boots and inside one of the boots was an unopened box of 1976 topps. I could not believe that she "cowboyed up" and bought me something so expensive. Of course I wanted her to tell me how much she paid to find out who took advantage of her. She told me that she bought it from a mutual friend of ours in Springdale, AR. for the price of $400. What a great deal and what a surprise.

    anthony,

it is true my wife buys me cards but she will not let me date either. if larry (king) is not interested the cousin is still single

  • Hah....good one. My advice to you is to hold on to your woman if she's buying you cards.

My wife's gift to me is letting me buy myself cards. That's good enough!!

  • Carlos,

That's hilarious! Thanks for posting it. That took some guts to post it here (or were you expecting it to turn up here sooner or later anyway, and just wanted to get it over with? image)

    Jeb,

Although the artical is over 10 years old, you just never know who will hack into Beckett's archives and out me. So yes, as horrible as it is, I just had to dust it off and take the abuse...lol

    Carlos
  • I am assuming you are no longer Beckett's "... No. 1 fan"??? image

Where would you rank yourself today on Beckett's list of fans? image

    Let the "abuse" begin.

BTW, I'm glad to see you posting here regularly again and hope you will continue to do so. You have made my collecting experience a little bit better, through some transactions and your posts here. Anyone that can do that is a major asset to the hobby in general, and I thank you for that.

    Frank,

I don't think she has ever seen it. I had it packed away (for many reasons)!!!

A couple weeks ago I cleaned out my closet and found the stupid thing. For some reason this thread reminded me of the artical so I thought I would share it.

This hobby makes me/us do very stupid things...lol

***I can't stop laughing, can you say DORK!!!***

  • My wife has never bought a card for me - she doesn't have a clue about cards, and I kinda like it that way. Every few years she feeds my other collection of autographed baseballs for Xmas, birthday or anniversary gifts. She tends to overspend and buy UD Authentic balls, but at least I kow the sigs are real.

Now tell the truth Carlos, don't you feel the same way about SMR?

My wife does not buy me cards and really finds it hard to believe that I pay a third party to judge condition, but since it is $6+ per grading she has decided to help me in that respect. She is very meticulous in going over the cards and often finds small flaws that I missed. As a result, she is often interested in how the grades turn out and then she gripes just like I do. "How can that be a 7 when that other one was an 8?" She is also a very savvy business person and sometime recommends cracking certain cards out for the possible bump in grade if selling is in the future for this card. So, although she does not condone it fully, she knows it will continue and therefore tries to make the best of it.

    Looking for 77 cloth 9s and 10s.

    Michael,

Now that you mention it, I do anticipate the arrival of my SMR, and I do have a computer listing of the prices of my cards. Come to think of it, if there was a dealer in town that received their SMR before me I probably would go pick one up.

I don't write SMR every week, so I guess I'm only half the dork I use to be...lol

Dryden is a VERY tough signature. He signed a few years ago at a Leafs function but he was pretty particular about what he was signing. I got him to sign his book THE GAME at a rotary club function a few years ago.

On our third date my now wife and I drove by a card store and she explained how she liked to collect cards. We went back to my place that night and looked at cards all night. The first card she bought me was a Ken Griffey Jr. Rookie card. She wanted to buy me a Larry Bird and Magic Johnson rookie card for the longest time and almost made a deal with somebody "but it was probably only NM with the centering" so she passed and I have since bought a PSA 8.

I usually have my wife check out my upgrades on PSA cards. If I have a PSA 6 or PSA 8 OC and I upgrade to a PSA 7 I usually put tape over the grade and have her tell me what card is better. She has agreed with PSA each time and she is a far more meticulous grader than I am.

she also bought me the leafs litho from gilbralter with goerge armstrong which is a very tough sig. dryden was offered like 10,000 for the canadians litho but turned it down.

Mine likes baseball to start with, so I let her go through some stacks of old cards a dealer had while I was cherry-picking his t206's. Happily, she found some that she really liked, and bought them on the spot herself!

So I need to know.... am I the only guy on the boards whose wife now collects 1940 Play Ball?
  • My Fiance has bought me alot of cards. Just a few days ago she bought a 1981 TCMA PSA.........10 for me . I just upgraded to a 9 and just flipped it for a nice profit!

when my wife and i started dating the subject that i collected cards never came up, she knew i played semi-pro baseball and i enjoyed sports. but after a few months it came up as i was changing plans to go to a card show. she had no problem with it and even asked me to come to the bedroom. when we opened the door the first thing that caught my eye was a babe ruth autographed ball. 100's of auto baseballs, bats, jersey's binders upon binders of cards that is when i found out my future father-in-law was a collector. my wife knew the history of the items plus the cards by years. we went to the card show together and married a year later. she is still amazing after 20 years she will suprise you. we own a hotel and i walked in the other day and she was discussing baseball and cards with one of the guest, she even mentioned card grading in passing. it is cool when the wife takes an interest in cards. her father want her to have it. so she will have a massive collection. maybe i can sweet talk her out of the 52 mantle.image

my wife never wrote to beckett for me. carlos you are the man the #1 fan. cool story.
