What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

I broadly agree with Razor. Reverse looks excellent - maybe 64, but the obverse has too many hits and scuffing for a 63.

Edited to say - Yes. I love that light gold toning!

        VERY attractive. I'll give it a 64 or 65.
      • I'm *very* new at this, but I think MS62. Unfortunatley, as I'm learning to grade, I seem to be grading 1 under everyone else on MS coins - so this may be an MS63 by default. image

You are doing well, subject 15837. You are a good person.

My first instinct looking at the pic was 64. So I'll go with that.

The obverse is a little scuffy, but I don't see any problem with this coin grading MS64.

My first guess was 63, but yours does look better than the 63 example, so I'll go with 64.

Yours looks better than the first 63 you pulled up but worse than the first 64 I pulled up.

          So it's somewhere in there.

PCGS MS65 is the grade. In my view it is a typical ms65 coin with excellent color. Thanks nwcs! the rest of you can jump in a lakeimage- just kidding I expected low grades from those not familiar with gold. mike image

A GEM grade is not surprising as I don't think most people can grade gold thru a picture. It's very tough. That coin has very little "scuff" actually. The "colour" (note the "u"...lol) makes this coin GEM, IMO. image

In person, it's easier but people who are used to Morgans will tend to undergrade a gold coin.

        • my guess is ms65 , i only have my gaudens to compare it to but gold is gold

        • I would have guessed 64 given the soft strike and ticks on the portrait. This is a 65 I would pass on, too many better 65s out there.

The best way to learn a series and how to get a better idea what's out there....go to a national show and look at box after box of coins. You'll soon see what a real 64 or 65 or 63 looks like. Years ago I bought about 8 FE cents, all "PCGS64s", half of them were low end I came to discover as I got better at grading. I now own 3 solid 65s, once you see a "REal" one you'll know.

soft strike? what do you mean soft strike? If you can find a 65 with no nicks or surface marks it's not a 65 it's a 69. I can take criticism well most of the time...... but you might want to take a look at a few $5 liberty's in MS65 so you can see that these are not graded the same as flying eagle cents. Sorry I just don't want those unfamiliar with $5 liberty's to read this and think they can compare the grade of a flying eagle cent to a $5 liberty. mike
