Would you put a BN coin in a top 5 IH Registry set?

(Just a hypothetical question, so pretend you own one of the top 5 sets. It's taken you a lot of time, work and money to get your collection to this level.)

One of the quirks in the PCGS pops are IH cents in MS BN where only 3 have ever graded 66 (with 1 67BN). They've graded almost 1000 66RD or higher. This is the 1864 w/L 66BN example, the 4th highest weighted date of the set. But it only counts as much as a 64RD in the Registry. And I'm sure many collectors like to have that "100% Red" tag on their set. There's something to be said for consistency. On the other hand, you'd be hard pressed to find a 64 L that compares to this one in eye appeal and technical merit.

Do you pay much more for a decent looking 65RD for consistency and extra points? Or do you defy the purists, go for the nicer brown coin and let the points fall where they may?

You bet I would if the coins eye appeal made the coin a cut above the average.

Nice coin....PM me the details, would you?? Don't recall seeing that one before!

I would stick with that "brown" coin. I guess I'd have to see the 65 red to compare it with, but the pictured coin looks awfully nice, and it would take a "lot" of coin to get me to lose your pictured coin, regardless of color.

Let the points fall where they may, that's a super coin.

Only if you want to be considered a "coin collector" of beautiful coins. I know that when I attend a show and sit mesmerized looking at high grade red IHC's I often find myself not remembering the date or the grade. However when I see a coin like that it sticks in my mind forever. Just like Tim's 1877, I would rather own these types of cents then some red ones. I have wondered if we don't do ourselves a disservice by just hunting down the red coins and bypassing coins like this.

I have to agree with the responses in favor of putting it in the set. It's a beautiful representation of the the year and grade. If I was striving for "perfection" I would certainly rather have the RD. If I'm working to complete a nice set of great looking examples of each date, this coin would most definitly fit the bill.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... and I'm beholding beauty here. Sent it to me and I will gladly give it a home in my sets. image

For the umpteenth time, let me chime in with this: I feel your agony about lower grade reds getting more points than a higher grade brown. It is SO SIMILAR to the pain I felt knowing that my pr70 washingtons were outweighted by pr69dcams and pr69cams. gee... the extra weights for dcam and cam proof washingtons is one reason I sold my registry set that had a pr70 run from 1960 to 1964.

  • YES!! I have some BN Lincoln wheats (MS) that are dripping with eye appeal. RD doesn't necessarily mean pretty.

    Hi Paul,

The coin you have pictured should be graded Brown with red.If you play the regrade game it is possible on a designation review to get the coin graded 66 red/brown.There is enough red to get a red brown designation. The coin could also grade 65 red/brown if you crack it out.

Should this coin be enterred into a top 5 registry set? I will say only if the other coins are brown or red/brown.I believe a set should be uniform in color and in grade. Most top registry sets are red.To keep them uniform I believe all the coins should be red.

Why do you think it is only a 65.
