Set Registry Display Poll

Hi All,

With over 1,500 set composites listed, our web pages were becoming unwieldy. The drop down boxes may not be the best solution, although they certainly make for a cleaner page and it still only requires two clicks to get to a set. Some have requested a further breakdown of sets within each sport, example, break out team sets from the Key Card category. This does not address the long page issue. Some have suggested adding second pages, which would require an extra click. In the case of baseball sets, for example, it would require a total 3 clicks to get to a set composite and would probably still require scrolling. Some have suggested leaving the drop down boxes, but adding a link to a master set of sets that would appear in the old format.

The bottom line is that nothing is set in stone and we are perfectly happy to make changes, within the current structure of the Registry, to suit your needs. So let's survey it and see what you all want!

Be sure to visit the Registry first before casting your vote. Thank you.

  • I think we should just keep it the way it was for those with slow internet connections and those who are pressed for time and don't like scrolling, like me.

but an extra page for team sets is also a good idea. But we should get rid of the box format.

  • BJ, I think that people seeing the word "current" in the first two choices of the poll are assuming you're talking about the display that they've seen for many months now and not the new display that was just implemented today.

Of course I could be wrong about that image.
  • Gemmint-

Your probley right about that !

My preference is also not to use the drop down boxes. Seeing all
the sets listed on one page is easier than scrolling down with the
    mouse.
Second comment: I posted on an opinion thread some time ago
and asked if it was possible when clicking on the
"View Member's Other Sets" tab within individual members'
collections to see some type of chronological order to them. Some
registry members have 30, 40, 50, or more sets registered and
and the way they are currently displayed looks disorganized.
    Thanks.

I like the new format - it makes it easier to see different kinds of sets. Keep the drop downs - just maybe enhance it with suggestions listed earlier.

I like it the other way and I just voted to keep it the same accidentially. I think it was very quick to pull up a set the other way. Now you have to scroll down until you reach the set you are looking for.

  • This poll needs to be done over. The word "current" needs to be replaced with the words "brand new".

Honestly I can't believe that the overall voting is so close because the new display stinks.

I liked the old version. Basically everything was right there and I could see what player set I wanted to start next. It was a lot easier to look at than it is currently. Separate pages are fine, as long as everything is viewable like before.

Props to BJ for asking us our thoughts! image

  • Thanks for fixing the poll BJ. Notice now how the two "go back to the original format" choices are pulling away from the two inferior "brand new" choices.

Not that I'm biased or anything image
  • I really don't like the drop down boxs. I liked the old format, but wouldn't mind more pages. I would really like to see a page for the team sets, and the sets ordered by team.

I would also like to second augustaman's coment on the "View Member's Other Sets". I too would like to see some order to that page.
  • This would be a great time to have multiple user names so that I could vote for the last option more than once. I think I may be the only one without a second name but my one vote definitely supports the last option.

  • BJ,

It looks like there is a clear cut winner in the voting.I believe in the old addage that"If it's not broke, then don't fix it"but I think that with the explosion of the set registry makes necessity the mother of invention. It is only a matter of time until something has to be done and the last category seems to fit the best.I do like the origional format, however.I was going to add another cliche but I decided not to. image

How about this, to avoid having to click twice to view a listing of sets. On the main page, do like ebay does with baseball cards listings. You can either click on Baseball to see all baseball sets, or click on a subheading like player sets. Very similar to option 4, I think.

  • I posted this on the other thread first, so here it is again:

For what it's worth, I have made decisions to collect cards based on sets that were easily visible in the old format. If I am searching the registry now, I will most likely skip over everything else and go to the set that I'm looking for.

I know that changes have been requested by members here in the past, but I don't think that this is what anyone had in mind. Will anyone ever view the "1947 Tip Top Bread" set again? I have viewed this set in the past, but if I have to scroll through a list, I will most likely skip over this one every time.

It's a shame that some wonderful "oddball" sets will be forced into obscurity. At a time when I was just getting into some of these sets, it will now take some effort on my part to find these sets buried within the drop downs.

    JEB.

My vote is back to the old format. so much easier to navigate. Thanks for asking!!!!!

  • How about a 'top 15' or 'favorites' section added? I mainly look at the same dozen or so sets, and it would be nice to have them listed for easy access. It could be added to the dropdown page, possibly.

Or how about the ability to choose from the dropdown or listing after you login. I would still suggest the ability to create a 'favorites' section in there also. That way, club members can customize their profiles anyway they like...

    Just brainstorming here...

P.S. BJ, just realize that if you change something and ask people right away what they want -- they almost always invariably will choose the old format.

My personal preference is a combination of the two -- one drop-down menu with an ability to go to a different submenu that continues the current format.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I understand that most people don't like change. It's just human nature. But regardless, it is clear to me that the majority wants to return to the old format with some enhancements.

We'll run this poll over the weekend and unless the majority changes, will return to the old format early next week. Then sometime before the end of October, we'll add some of the enhancements you have suggested. I really like the idea of adding category links to the Set Registry home page and will discuss that option with our programmers.

In the meantime, I have created a new category for the team sets and am in the process pulling those sets from the Key Card category. I will update them in team order after they are all moved from Key Card.

And gee whiz, everyone has been so busy conversing about the new format that not one person has said yeah or nay about the split out of the non-sportscards! This is something that many people have asked for in recent months. Can I assume since there's been no chatter about it, it's OK with everyone?

As always, should you have any feedback, please let me know. Thanks.

BJ, would this be the appropriate thread to make other suggestions regarding the registry? Several threads have been written on the subject but I don't know if you and the powers that be have read them.

  • I think the pull down menus might not be so bad if there were more categories. It's a nightmare scrolling through them now, but if the baseball "set" section were broken into tobacco, early gum & candy, Topps, Bowman, etc it might be more manageable.

    Joe,

Both the coin and card registries are going great guns and I'm just getting ready to launch the new stamp registry before the end of the year, so I seldom have time these days to read the forums. I obviously am taking the time today because I'm monitoring this poll.

It is always best to email me directly with any ideas or suggestions. I keep a file on good suggestions, although some we simply cannot implement now due to the current parameters of set registry programming. But I keep the file for the day we revamp the Registry. So send any good idea you may have my way! If it's a little change, I can sometimes get it pushed through quickly. If it requires some major programming, it may take many months. Our IS department keeps a very strict schedule because they provide programming for the entire Collectors Universe group of companies and must prioritize their work. So from my vantage point, everything I send to them is high priority, but they are also getting requests from other divisions that actually may be more important to the success of CUI. Can you believe that!

Bottom line... send ideas my way and if they make sense, they may eventually come to fruition.

    BJ,
As someone who asked for a seperate "non-sports" catagory about a year ago, I am glad to see it. I would , however, prefer to see the catagory renamed to "Non-Sports" rather than just "Misc". I think us non-sport collectors deserve a proper name.image
