No telling how much of that is just dirt/pollution.
I would certainly dip it in acetone just to see what's really there. It might actually have a little luster left, you never know.
"Lenin is certainly right. There is no subtler or more severe means of overturning the existing basis of society(destroy capitalism) than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and it does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose." John Marnard Keynes, The Economic Consequences of the Peace, 1920, page 235ff
You don't need anything to get the acetone off the coin, it will evaporate extremely quickly and leaves no residue.
Cecil Total Copper Nutcase - African, British Ships, Channel Islands!!! 'Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup'
<< <i>This may be a silly question but .... how do you get the acetone off the coin once it has been dipped? >>
cosmos66... Acetone will quickly evaporate off the coin on it's own. Be very careful handling this stuff. It is VERY flammable. Only use in well ventelated areas.... like outdoors. You would be suprised by the number of coin cleaners and coin doctors who have been found dead over the years,(no joke)killed by the chemicals and the poisons that they use on coins.
techeff... Nice coin, I bet it has more luster than the image shows. I would leave it be, but then again acetone will not affect the toning, it will only remove unwanted residue.
