a couple of frankies would have made my day, but I was happy just to find what I did ~ funny thing, the tellers at B of A were excited to see the coins go and told me that had plenty more where those came from ~ I turned two rolls into my bank and the teller slammed em down and said "I thought you were my friend" ~ she told me Wamu sends all 50 centers and sacs out of the branches...
went to Bank of America ~ a teller told me merchants bring em in and they get stuck with em and they have no problem at all selling em to me, she even told me to check with the merchant tellers ~ Wamu never has any cause they send em back to the reserve when the have enough for a roll, except when I dump rolls on them after the search
At my Washington Mutual I,ve been going in for boxes of cents. Sometimes they ask ` What dio you do will all those pennies?` I say I,m sorta of a coin collector and I like to go through them and pick the ones I like. They roll there eyes basicly. One teller gave me a look like, this poor guy must really be lonely. how sad.
Doug: Frankly, my results were a fair number of coins in flips to be submitted at a later date. I have not had a great deal of success achieving MS67RD Lincolns of late. Grading success comes and goes and sometimes timing is everything. Sometimes it is simply better to "keep you powder dry" and wait for the ideal time to submit.

Hey guys and girls, Let me tell you that from experience, that looking through rolls of halfs DOES pay off. Two years ago I was on a quest and I found hundreds, of silver Kennedys, Franklins AND Walkers. NO LIE. My wife thought I was nuts untill she saw what I was finding. I'M STILL HOOKED, but I don't have the time I use to. Also, I had some bad experiences with tellers when I turned in the unwanted ones but it was worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Joe
I had just posted in another thread that a few months ago I had checked out $160 worth of Halves. I only found 1 40%er and it was in terrible condition. This was Central Bank.
A suggestion: go to Yahoo YP > select a town > banks > print the page > check the mapquest links and make notes on the printout (ex- Jct Rt 123 and School St).
Perhaps a Sat morning visit to a few towns a bit out of the way (ie 20-40 miles from home). Bring lots of cash; although you won't actually spend much (a few bucks gas and whatever halves you save).
Best to check the bank's webpage ; you can usually find the hours a given branch is open.
Also, if you happen to see a silver dime or quarter in the teller's coin trays, naturally ask for it, but you might want to buy a few rolls from that teller.
Half Dollar hunting since 1991, so far 2,477 90% halves found (kept them all), roughly 10,000 40% found (sold most to a local shop or on ebay).
Recent finds: 4 rolls, the tape was so old, it turned to dust as I opened them > 76 Walkers & 4 Barbers. The 1940's Walkers were sliders ; one, a '43 was BU. About a dozen early Walkers, including an '18-S and a '19-S, both in Fine. The Barbers (2-1898, 1909,1911) were G-VG. Appears that they were saved near the end of WW2 (only a single '45, nothing later), and recently deposited at the bank.
Quite a find !!
Just last week, a teller had, in her tray, (5) 1992-S Columbus commems (clad).
Been getting nothing but 1971's and beat up 1990's JFK's lately..... and not many of those. Tellers are on to me and picking out the good stuff, I guess.
I went through $100 in rolled halves today, got about 35 - bicentennials, 2 - 98Ds that have unbelieveable cartwheels, 1 - 71D with no ticks but a light strike and 1 - 71D that has beautiful Gold-Red-Light Blue toning on both the obverse and reverse.
I'm in the Boston area; as an unemployed professional, can only work the Monster Board, etc for so long > once a week I'll do a day trip, usually on Thurs or Fri (the banks are usually open a couple of hours later).
When working, I'll do the Sat am trips (banks usually open 9-12); for now I'll do the longer trips, sometimes 100-200 miles from home.
With the Red Sox disaster last night, didn't feel like any serious driving, stayed local, very few halves, but one teller had $14 face.....with 6 Walkers (40s), 3 Franklins (51, 54,54D), and a 64, along with a few 40%. Running count of 2,487 90%.
A temp (to perm) job could come at any time; I'll probably have to take it. But if all's quiet....next Thurs or Fri, I'll fire up the Accord and head out (weather permitting) ....
It's a crapshoot what you'll get, but you have to keep looking. The odds are very good that you'll get at least one silver clad half per roll. Merchants frequently dump halves, SBA's and Sacs on banks when they come in to make their deposits. That's how I get a lot of mine. They will not use them for change. Most of the rest are brought in by individuals. The way the tellers react when they get halves dumped on them is at least "half" of the problem of why they don't circulate. The merchants not using them to make change makes up most of the other "half" of the problem. It is not painful, I assure you, to give them out. I do, and get very few complaints.
Why don't you put them back in circulation? Pay for small purchases with them. That way you will be getting different coins from the bank, insteadof the recycled ones?
Just a thought.

P.S. I'll have a "midnight snack" of perhaps another 500 Lincolns when I watch Leno tonight
<< <i>I went through around 1200 SBA's, 400 Kennedy halves and close to 1,000 Lincoln cents today. Tired eyes comes with the territory
