Question about rarer date Shield nickels?

jdimmickjdimmick Posts: 9,749 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was presented with an opportunity to pick up two of the rarer date shield nickels 79 and 80. I have not seen the coins, but have been told that they were borderline goods, but problem free. I personally would not be intrested in obtaining them in such low grade for myself, but merely for possible re-sale. (Please do not bash me for posting this, in this forum, this is not an offer to sell them.)

My purpose and question for shield nickel collectors is : Do you believe there is intrest in these type scarcer dates even in that low of grade?
And are there specifics that collectors like to see like complete rim's, full legible dates, etc?
I am mainly asking if you think they would be worth picking up?

If I choose to get them and decided to sell them, they would be mentioned in the BST forum at the appropriate time?

thanks
jim

Someone told me all 1880s sell like hotcakes. So I would say go for it!

Don't buy them sight unseen. Shield nickels graded "good" are often awful. The dates are very saleable but don't buy them unless they have some eye-appeal for the grade.

I would love to buy an 1880 Nickel in any grade (not proof) as long as it has no major problems. I'll be watching BST all the time now in case you post it!! (unless you want to pm me first image )

    Jim,

If your a dealer then you don't need to ask forum members.Step up to the plate, buy the coins, and offer them for sale.

    Full rims would probably help.
If the price is right.... Go for it.
  • hey buy em and sell em, lets goimage

  • I would say to go for them IF you can get a look first and see that they don't suffer any issues. I've seen a lot of Problem free shields in lower grades that are just ugly. They might be things to pass upon if the "ugh! quotient" is too high.

  • If they aren't damaged and the price is reasonable they should be saleable. Even damaged they would probably move if the price was right.
  • If the dates are legible, there should be a lot of interest in those two coins.
I don't like to buy coins sight unseen, unless I know the dealer and trust his judgement.
