Greattoning offers some neat looking coins. But with a 10% restocking fee for returns you'd better be sure. While this is a stunning coin I would say the obv just misses AU while the reverse just makes it. The obv got a color bump to make the coin AU50 overall. Just mo.

High bidder is "earlybucks". I wonder if that's handlespeak for "old money". image

The toning on that one seems similar to CoinLt's half, although his is much much nicer.

Is it my imagination, or is that some major doubling of the T in Liberty?

Geatoning has some neat coins on ebay but his 10% restocking fee makes one think twice. I like the rev of this coin as an AU but the obv seems a bit too well worn with not much if any luster. Looks like it got a color bump from XF45 to AU50. But a wonderful looking coin nontheless.

  • Hey cosmos66,
Where did you get that Morgan reverse picture at? Is it in the normal selection panel in the profile area? I want that pic, it is quite nice and a good size. But if you don't want anyone else to have it, I understand that.

Yes ... that is a normal selection in the profile area. I am still waiting for my new camera and will put up my own picture as soon as I get it.

Gives me another chance to post my 1806 pointed 6 no stem. I like mine better (of course) stone original, pcgs AU58 correctly graded and no bump for color.image

Yep, I saw that one. I thought it was AT and was surprised to see it in an PCGS holder. I have to wonder how it became toned like that. It was circulated for some time to have wear. Usually circulated old silver does not have bright rainbow colors. The centers are untoned. Silver this old just does not remain untoned. My guess is the coin was dipped white long ago and was placed in a paper roll with other coins.

I believe you are on the right track there Merc. Probably an old "Warsh" as Bailey calls it, and re-toned. Yes many of these had this (Warsh) done to them. And I think the services give them some slack. The obv appears to have had a fair amount of circulation, and with those electric colors it just doesn't seem right. I don't see any good looking dirt in the denticles or in the crevices or anything. I'm trying to be as nice as I can image

I'm also sure this will get bid up pretty high in price. Different strokes I guess. I would much rather pay for a stone original piece myself. Of course I could be way off base here as well.

Initially I when I saw the coin I thought the very same thing. Good call. image
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever
  • This coin is very beautiful and no doubt will bring some good money. I think it was dipped in the past and then toned the nice colors. I do like the more original look myself as a rule, but this coin does look nice from an eye appeal standpoint.

I don't think the grading was bumped for color. It looks to be a nice AU50 to me.

  • I like that one in the auction. Not too wild looking and the colors are nice.

Looks like it came out of a Wayte Raymond holder. ......AU 50 or 48, I can't tell, but certainly has "the look."imageimage

that is a lot of coin. Plenty of meat, the look basically defines "old cleaning" and then "long album toning"

certainly worth AU money and maybe even Choice AU price because of the eye appeal, even if it is, purely technically speaking, more of a choice XF coin.

Just goes to show you that the technicals are important, but eye appeal (not to mention genuine scarcity) do count too.
