Is That All There Is to a 1968 Topps Baseball Set?

You people completely missed the point! I'm not bashing the set at all. I just questioned why people spend years and lots of money building these sets only to sell them when they finally complete them. Before you reply back that, "it's the chase", I promise you most people won't tell you nor believe that when they start the project.

Here's the set for sale:

I've lost count of how many of these '68 sets have been on the auction block lately.

And a "please explain" would have worked wonders. If you are going to call people names, you were lucky to get this much of a reply.

  • Hey Smiley

I guess I am not as smart as you. My 68 set is at 8.98 and not once have I thought of singing that song. I know this isn't the toughest set in the world but lets see you build a 598 card set to 8.98. I am pretty sure you will be singing the money blues. And also just in case you are wondering if you offended me let me take the guess work out and say yes.

What is your point to this thread? To write a pointless song and share it with everyone or to offend people on the message board? I really wish that the SportsModerator would do his job and start cutting people like you off from posting senseless posts like this. I would like to see your $1000 set that you have placed out on the set registry so I could write a song about it. Stump, you have a wonderful set and sorry you were offended by this jerk. I will apologize for you.

There's lots of reasons to build and then sell a set. I've built and sold four of them. I've also purchased one. It seems like a pretty normal course of action in the collecting world.

Is this the same set that was sold by Superior at the National? I thought it sold for around $22,000.

  • If you guys notice his original message is edited. You missed him putting down the 68 set.

And just for the record smiley I would never put down peoples sets just because I might think its funny or I dont underestand. You state please explain how about instead of writing a stupid little ditty you ask why.Your time may be better spent commending people for there accomplishments. If a person wants to sell there set after they are done thats their biz. Whatever works for them is what they should do. Sometimes the chase, the investment or because they are just bored.

I say let people collect what they want and for the reasons they want. If someone wants to put together a PSA 10 1989 Topps set, more power to them. If someone wants to build a PSA 1 1952 Topps set, great. If someone wants to build a set card by card and then sell it when completed to move on to something else, I see no problem with that either. The point is people should collect what they want and how they want to maximize the enjoyment of collecting.

People should be able to collect however they want. For most, it's also important to consider the short and long term financial impact of the cards we buy. I have always thought that if you buy into a high grade vintage set...you are actually committing yourself (or another person who inherits the set) to becoming a dealer in that issue down the road. When you build a particular set, you not only acquire the cards...but also a valuable knowledge base of which cards are truly "rare" in high grade.

  • itsawonderfullife,

When I first read your thread,I too was a little put out.I did not feel the need to get upset because I have a tendency to take everything lightly and not read too much into anything.I can however, see how some people who collect this set might be miffed.I think that it took a lot for you to edit your origional post and post a positive response to it.I would hope that others would see the positive effort that you put forth. As a new member on our boards,it is good to see a positive response by you instead of a negative response that seems so prevalent on these boards lately.I commend you and challenge those that were offended to also see the positive response as what it was intended to be.
After all, everyone sees things with a different perspective. Thanks for the response.

Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.
