Wilmington, NC Fall Coin Show

My daughter has a recruiting trip (swimmer) at UNC Wilmington this coming weekend so I will be in the area. I see in NN that the fall coin show is taking place at the American Legion. My wife and I have a house on Holden Beach for the weekend and I need to know if attending the show will be worth the battle with my wife. I just told her yesterday that I will be going to a show in Chattanooga at the end of the month so she will not be excited about this news. Any one else going? Any dealers at the show with nice commems? I need some serious arm twisting here folks.

Can't help with show info, but why not spend a lot of time with your wife so she doesn't feel neglected, and carve out a couple hours for yourself for the show?

Make her a nice breakfast and offer her dinner in Calabash or at Betty's Waterfront on B-Var Road with a walk on the beach later. Let her take a nap in the afternoon on the deck - then make a mad dash for Wilmington, and get back before she wakes up! image "Oh, gee, hon, you were having a nice nap so I just ducked out for a couple hours."

BTW, my parents live about a mile from the causeway to Holden Beach.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Hi John:

You might try the coinworld site or Coinshows.com to see if you find anything - I'm going to try to make it to the Chattanooga show at the end of this month!

    Take care!

A well thought out plan. But darn her, she never takes a nap. That's my job in our house.image

I've been going to Holden for over 25 years. What a wonderful place. I am sure your parents enjoy the area. Do they live in Lockwood? I had some property there but sold it about 5 years ago.

Anyone have anything on the show?

    Hi Frank.

Look forward to seeing you in Chattanooga. But you are not allowed to pick up any commems until I have seen them first.image

Hmmmm....maybe there are no East Carolinians on the forums. I at least got an email from a lurker. Anyone else have any experience with this show?
  • Fatman,
I am stationed here at Ft Bragg, NC and the Cape Fear coin club meets tonight, I know of one dealer in the club that is going to Wilimington, I will ask about the quality of the show and get back with you tonight.

Hopefully Allen will find out from a dealer freind of ours. He sets up at all the local shows. It has been a year or two since I have visited the Wilmington show, but many people in this area like it. Its a little better than your typical small show, but will not compare to Chattanooga.

If you do attend and are looking for commemoratives, you might want to check with Alan Flowers (Triangle Gold, Durham, NC.) He will be set up and usually has a good selection of certified (PCGS/NGC ). He is very fair on pricing and great guy. He only does two day show's due to being handicapped in a chair.
