PCGS Weighting Designation for Proof Liberty Seated

There have been recent posts regarding PCGS designations in the Registry on FBL Franklins, FB Roosies, FS Nickels, etc. Many have suggested that the weighting is too heavy in favor of the designations, perhaps even affecting market activity and pricing.

Well, PCGS is rolling out weighting for Proof Liberty Seated. All of the series give 1 point for CAM and 2 points for DCAM. (1) What do you think about that? (2) Are the designation weigthings too heavy? (3) Is this going to start (invigorate) a dipping frenzy?

My answers:

(1) Actually, I don't know what to think. The Registry might not have as much of an affect on Liberty Seated collecting preferences and prices as they have on the other desginated series.

(2) Yes they are. Admittedly, I have a toning bias. If PCGS wasn't so afraid to give a toned coin a CAM/DCAM designation, I would not have as much of a problem.

(3) No. Conservation services have already had quite an influence. Can't see yet even more coins taking a bath. Well, let's hope anyway.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

Ronyahski, you've answered your own question imo. YES, YES and YES. But the effect is already somewhat in place. Like when I see
ebay auctions selling DCAM PF67 1880's quarters for $20,000. Frankly, I'll take a wonderfully toned PF67 for one fifth of that. Or a wonderful PF 68 for half of that.

It is downright stupid and ignorant to just say that a CAM is worth 1 pt more and a DCAM 2 pts more. In reality it differs for every date in the series and each one has to be evaluated separately. What was instituted for the modern proof registries doesn't necessarily apply. And of course it will lead to a continue dipping mania of nice original proofs. It has already been going on.

2 points for a DCAM and a quadrupling of the value......get REAL.
As long as PCGS and NGC can increase submissions, they will continue to do so. Full strike for every series will eventually make its way around. Wouldn't be surprised that in 3-5 years they don't actually ad the designations: "originally toned" or "undipped." Those should be worth 2 or 3 registry points easy.

  • I think we've seen enough examples of coins that when dipped got bumped in grade or received the cam designation. This must encourage dipping. I think it is a problem.

I am OK with a 2 point bonus for DCAM on those proofs. I guess they occur most frequently in the last 1890s but don't seem common even in those dates. Perhaps some years should get an even larger bonus?

There still has not been enough time passed to really assess the rarity of the seated dcams. Possibly as type coins, but no so as dates. The data base has to be larger and it will take several more years. As prices escalate more existing toned coins will get dipped
looking for a DCAM. All of the existing slabbed proofs have to make it back to market before a good data base exists.

To me, you can add 2 point s for DCAM but subtract one for the dipping. In 5-10 years you'll have a brownish/spotted DCAM proof
that may unsaleable at the DCAM price levels. Another dipping will be in order at some point if the DCAM craze is still in effect. Eventually the coin will be overdipped as to be a problem coin. I'll stick with nicely toned original Plain Proofs and CAM Proofs.
