How to remove cards from holder

Can someone help direct me to any thread regarding the easiest way to remove a card from a PSA holder without destroying the card? I’m assuming this has been discussed here before. If not, what are your thoughts? I have not tried it yet, but it looks tricky. image

  • The way that PSA recomends is to cut the corners with wire cutters. I use a sharp screwdriver. I hold the card on edge and tap down through the flip. They open up quite easily.

I have used a razor blade along the left or right edge of the holder. You have to be careful not to push to hard when the blade finally breaks through the edge so that you don't hit the card. The other method I have done is to crack the top two corners with pliers and the rest pulls apart pretty easily. Wire cutters do sound easier though for that method, I haven't tried that.
  • Try a rotary tool (Dremel is what I use). Use a cutoff wheel and cut through the holder on front and back, just below the flip. Snap the flip end off and pry the holder apart. With SGC cards, the black insert acts as a "key" and you can just pull the card out by grabbing the "flip" end after it has been cut.

I can't believe some of you use archaic hand tools to do this! image

Good luck with your cracking. Let me know if you need additional guidance. I would be happy to help.

  • Thanks for all the techniques. I probably shouldn’t have used the chain saw on that ’52 Mantle card then huh?image
  • I second JEB's use of the Dremel rotary tool. Its quick, precise and you have good control over where the break will be. I might be a little more patient that most, but I still have a clean break every time usually in under 45 seconds.

  • You boil them in cooking oil, so that the slabs slip right off....or... you can just get a plier and break off the corner and get a screwdriver and pry it open. Very easy!!! image

  • Has anyone else noticed how ridiculously easy GAI slabs are to open, often with little or no damage evident?

Isn't that the sort of thing a bright young company should have figured out how to avoid on Day 1?
