How much wax do you have?

I just got finished reading a couple of threads where people are paying big bucks again for mid 80's PSA 10's (pop 1 of 1), and I can't seem to understand their logic....

Most of the collectors I know have several boxes (if not closets) full of 80's wax, cellos, racks, vending, etc. that they haven't even thought about opening yet. (Until they see these guys paying $40 to $100 for a high graded common).

Anyway, I thought it might be interesting to see how many of you have a "wax stash" too.

What years, and approx. how much unopened material do you have stored away for the long, cold winter?

  • I have about 8 boxes of 1990 (First year- ?) Skybox basketball Series 2. It isn't worth the paper it is printed on, but back in the day I loved that stuff.
  • I have one unopened Vending case of 1986 Topps Baseball. If the power goes out for an extended period of time in the winter, my generator quits, and my car wont start I keep it around for kindling. I am told those tightly wrapped "bricks" actually burn for quite a while. :-)

I don't have much. Just a handful of single packs from the 70's, a wax box each of Topps base. from 1980-1986, and a run of fleer bask. wax boxes from 1986-1989. Not going to retire with any of this stuff.

I have been selectively buying single wax packs and boxes for years and have a decent amount stored up. A box of 1977 Topps Baseball and Football (how rare is this box for some reason?) and Basketball. Five or six boxes of 1977 Star Wars cards, including the increasingly difficult first series. 1978 Topps Football box, Three boxes of 1981 Topps Football, 1986 Topps Football. And my favorite -- a pack of 1969 Topps Basketball and four packs of 1970 Topps Basketball. Also a bunch of packs of 1981 Topps Basketball and some random loose packs from the 1970's. They are fun to have and except when I lose my mind and open 25 rack packs of 1979 and 1980 Football for no apparent reason only to get a stack of off centered semi stars and commons I am glad I keep them in the house...
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

  • MRc2, only 8 or so, I'm sitting on a case of 1990 skybox and 1990 hoops. As well as enough vending boxes of 1984 and 1986 topps to make deutchergeist happy........
  • dbj77-
    YES, ONLY 8!

You see I opened the rest of the case. Now I have some 5 super monster boxes of CHERRY mint 1990 skybox commons. I plan to retire on those cards when grading early 90s basketball really takes off.

I'll sell you 500 Derrick Coleman Draft Cards for $10 a piece.....c'mon you know its a bargin!

Money is your ticket to freedom.
  • With this topic you really need to be specific about the year you're discussing. Some years are easier to get 10's than others. You also have to look at each sport. Lets use 1985 Topps for example. 85 Topps baseball has it's issues (print spots, some fuzzy photography, color quality) but it's possible to get 10's. 85 Topps football (black borders, chipping) is virtually impossible to get 10's. Don't get me wrong, you can get them. But you would have to break and submit large quantities for a shot.
RayBshotz mentioned 86 Topps baseball. Vintage collectors scoff at this modern stuff, but 86 is a tough year for baseball and football. Baseball has the dual colored borders. The black border portion shows every nick of white and whenever there is a print mark, it seems to land on the border. Card stock is poor and there are centering issues. With football centering and chipping are the big problems and the card stock is just as bad as baseball.
Bottom line is you could have a vending case (rack cases are better for this year) and get very few cards that are submittable.

I've got a few wax packs from '60-'74, just started trying to get one from each year. I do have a full case of '88 Donruss, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Probably end up using it to start a bonfire one day.

Buccaneer- I just sent 4 '70 packs in for grading, I'm interested in trading one or more.

Luckily I started to collect unopened stuff in 1997 when it was fairly cheap. Just started to get them graded (none have been rejected yet), here's what I have for baseball:

    16 rack packs 1968 - 1978
    13 cello packs 1969 - 1975, 1979
    25 wax packs 1970 - 1974
    full 75 mini box
    10 76 and 77 wax packs
    full 78 box
    1979 and 1980 wax trays

    Football: 17 wax and cello packs, 1968 - 1974

    Basketball: 35 wax packs, 1969 -1976. Also have a 73/74 rack pack

Current obsession, all things Topps 1969 - 1972

  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
Its really too bad PSA isn't grading these- they seem to be focused on ticket stubs, and I think this would prove more lucrative for them- especially when a registry set of unopened packs was created. Instead it'll end up being on Global's site.

  • $3k sounds like a bargain. With 24 packs, thats not even $150 each.

Any post 1960 FB pack would likely go for at least $200 graded. You've made at least a few grand in profit on it. Nice purchase.
  • packCollectorpackCollector Posts: 2,786 ✭✭✭
griffins , psa isn't doing it because the grade will be irrelevent eventually. the whole purpose with a pack is that it is authentic. the other issue is there are only a select few authenticaters that could do the job. murphy is a dealer and the obvious conflict of interest came up quick and he parted his ways with global. paul wright is the best out there and global has him so it would be tough for psa to dod it. what non dealer could they get that would be accepted by the larger vintage collectors? my guess is they will stay out for this reason and the fact that they are owned by CU and it would not be profitable becasue there isn't enough vintage wax to support the overhead. my 2 cents

my latest unopened acquisition 3 mint cellos wrapped in a rack

This one will put me out of commission for a little whileimage
  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
Pack collector- I agree on the grading- the only thing I'm really interested in is whether the pack is authentic and untouched, the grade is irrelevant as long as the pack has eye appeal. I recently had the choice between 2 packs from the same year- one was graded 7.5 but had a tear down the side, the other was 6.5 apparentely due to cracked gum (like I was going to eat it anyway). The 6.5 had considerably more eye appeal. Guess the rule of "buy the pack, not the holder" applies.

  • 2 gai 9 1984 football packs, box 86 and 87 Donruss baseball, and i like to pick up box here there of 88, 89 topps football, but bust them to chew the fine aged gum. It's impossible to get 10's from 85 or 86 topps football, those are good investment potential cards, don't care how much wax might be out there, you ain't getting lots of 10's from that stuff............NHLfightguy
  • BuccaneerBuccaneer Posts: 1,794 ✭✭
I think I got a 1989 UD box but I know I got a 1987 Donruss wax box, kept solely for the black borders. Same thing with a 1986 Topps wax box but that ain't worth diddly. Wish I had stuff in the 1970s when I was a kid but I was too busy collecting for the fun of it. When I co-managed a store in Ky in the late 1980s, we just didn't get many (if any) vintage packs or boxes.
  • I have about 90 sealed boxes of 1990 Leaf series 2 (Thomas) and 60 sealed boxes of 1990 Leaf series 1 (Sosa). I still buy these when they are cheap enough. From what I've seen even the major dealers (Murphy, Kruk, Pittsburgh, and D and A) don't even have 10% of this amount left. Hopefully I'm not wrong. The range for the Series 1 boxes (Sosa) has been between $150 and $200 over the last 2 months. Needless to say, these aren't very stable.
    Chad.

You guys laugh at the 1990 Skybox basketball but I want to see somebody with the cohones (?) to attempt that set in high grade. 10's are really really tough from that set. It's numbers parallel a vintage set. Only 80 PSA 10's out of 2210 total graded. Everyone will use the excuse that they only collect "vintage" and that stuff is junk but it's just as tough as some vintage sets.

You have got to be kidding. If you ever want to start the 1990 Skybox set....PM me. I have so many of those cards in PRISTINE condition. They are just waiting for some brave soul to grade them....

  • Wabbitt is right. It's hard to get perfectly centered 1990 skybox cards, that and the gold borders act like the t205 gold borders, any and all scratches/dings/chips show up like a mother. I've opened about 20 boxes so far and have only had a handful that I'm sure would grade 10's. Lots of 9's, but 9's are worthless for that issue.

    a funny wax story;

We had ants in our basement for weeks, and I couldn't figure out where they were coming from... or what they were attracted too. After much digging through old boxes... I came accross a big box I had filled with some cheap football wax boxes (about 10 years ago) and had completely forgotten about. I figured maybe the ants were going after some old gum or something, so I start taking out the boxes, and at the bottom I find a swarm of ants feasting on an old pack of 1991 Stars and Stripes.

Stars & Stripes was a test set by Fleer that had football cards and a couple of candy sticks in them. The candy sticks had melted all over the place.... and not only had the ants eaten their way through the package, they had also eaten about a nickel sized hole right through one of the cards. As I'm wiping the ants off of the card, I notice they've basically decapitated Dan Marino's head from his body. It almost looked like they did it on purpose.... you could see a little shadow where his head used to be, and they followed the outline of his helmet almost perfectly.

I wish now I would have saved the card... it would have been fun to send it in for grading!

I just remembered something along the lines of Score boxes. In 1988, I bought about 14 boxes of Topps Bigs (all three series) thinking that they were special since they are very attractive cards. I still have about 3-4 boxes from each of the series but I don't even see anything about them listed anywhere. Are they that worthless?
