    hey bush

cameron or someone might happen onto this and cause it's move to the BST, so why don't you post a nice close-up of the MM and start some discussion about it with an edit to the original post and thread title??

this is an interesting error that i don't fully understand. it's referred to as D/D, D/Lazy D and D/Horizontal D which causes me to wonder exactly what the MM should look like. i currently have two examples of the date with an OMM, a VF and MS65-66 non FS which cost me the princely sum of $4 for both. neither exhibits what i would term a horizontal D, more of a typical D/D where the one D is slanted somewhat.

did you slab it or purchase it holdered? short of a nice close-up, can you give a description or drawing of what the two MM's look like? thanks.

  • Sorry, my digi-camera is not Mac OS10 compatible and my scanner wont show detail that small, so no image.

There are nice pix of this very rare variety in Cherrypickers Guide, The RPM Book , and Breen's encyclopedia. Surely everyone has a copy of at least one of these if they are serious about coins!

Curiously, every example of this variety I have seen has had strong steps, even this one that ANACS says is a Late Die State. This is the third one I have cherried.

    hey Bush

looking in my Breen's for comparison, the orientation of my coin's MM is the same, somewhat tilted. the only difference being that the first "D" is a very prominent vertical bar. probably my best approach would be to send the coin in to ANACS. as you noted, the steps are strong, though not full on my MS example.

  • There is also a RPM #1 on these which is not valuable. (sp?) But for 10-12 bucks you should definitely have ANACs check it out.

BTW -I sent this coin to PCGS with the proper ID # for FS-31, RPM #2, but they sent it back as a regular MS64 46-D.
Pretty disgusting that they would drop the ball just because it was not submitted under the error coin tier.
