1934 goudey versus 1938 goudey

recently i decided to collect 1938 goudeys
but have noticed 1938 goudey cards are
selling for more $ than 1934
1938 psa 5 sell for $70
1934 psa 7 sells for $85
any logic to this?

    As I understand it.
'38 was produced in much smaller numbers.
it is also somewhat less collected today.

perhaps Marshall or Davalillo or "Mike Schmidt" will chime in with an informative post.

edited to add: I believe poor national economic conditions drove this.
edited again to add: at $85 for a PSA 7, I would have to say that is a relatively good buy.
..................perhaps I should complete my '34 Goudey?

unfortunatly the only card I own is Gehrig that Alan Hagar trimmed, slabbed and I was dumb enough to actually buy off e-bay purchases about 6 years ago..... before I knew any better about him.

It's still in the "evidence of trimming" Coffin

  • i still hate to part with the 1934 cards but i made up my mind to collect the 1938
goudey cards all though 1938 psa 7s don't seem to be for sale very often
i don't have deep pockets so psa 5s are good for me
  • The 1938 set is great! the big head idea was great.

Absolutely nothing wrong with collecting vintage cards in psa 5

Not sure about cards in this grade although I would guess this is just luck of the draw. The real expert in 1934 Goudey in this grade is Tom(GoSoxBoSox). 1934 Goudeys in psa 8 would go at a premium to the 1938 Goudeys due largely to the greater popularity of the set--not everyone likes the cartoonish nature of the 1938 Goudeys.

  • murcerfan is correct, 1938 goudeys were produced in far fewer quantities, plus they come up for sale much more infrequently
  • i like both sets 1934 and 1938
i just thought the psa 1938 cards would be more afordable
but there are lots of bidders
depending on the player the 1934 cards can get expensive
    oh well collecting is FUN
  • There certainly seems to be less 1938 Goudey's available, but I'm not as familiar with them as the 1934 set. I certainly think the '34s are more popular to collectors because the '34 set offers a wider variety of stars. The '38 set only contains 24 different players. Two of each player totaling 48 cards. The '34 set has 96 cards and plenty of Hall of Famers.

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you quote these prices but if you EVER see PSA 7's for $85 you can rest asure I was in a comma (possibly alcohol induced, but nonetheless). Since the article about this collection in September's SMR this set has been hot hot hot. But you never know, every once in a while a low number card may slip by if there happened to be a run on them in the recent past on eBay.

The story on '34's is this. PSA 4's or lower can be taken at auction at or below SMR unless it's one of the Gehrig's, Dean, Grove, Foxx, DeShong (110-140% of SMR), or Greenberg (130-170% of SMR).

Mid-grade cards PSA 5-7 are really hot fetching anywhere from 100- 170% SMR depending on (1) if it's a low, mid, or high number card; (2) if it's one of the key cards listed below; and most importantly (3) how readily available the card has been on eBay.

PSA 8's are available once in a while on eBay and can reach prices exceeding 300% of SMR. Two weeks ago #9 Ben Chapman sold for $1565 (SMR is $395), and #79 Pinky Higgins sold for ~$1500 (SMR is $475).

PSA 9's are a rarity. I've only seen one on eBay and it had an OC qualifier. There are no 9's for most of the set and no more than 4 for any one card. If you find one you can throw out the SMR.

PSA 10's you can forget finding.

Cards with qualifiers always sell at prices two to three grades lower.

The key cards are listed below. There's not a doubt in my mind that Greenberg is by far the toughest to find in PSA 6 or better. When you find it, be ready to pay at least double SMR to start. The Grove and Dean are close behind.

    #1 Foxx
    #6 Dean
    #19 Grove
    #37 Gehrig
    #61 Gehrig
    #62 Greenberg
    #96 DeShong

I've also found that #76 Hal Trosky is a particular hard card to find and is extremely under-valued.

If you look around the web you'll find four or five PSA 8 cards available from various dealers at about 150% of SMR. Nothing graded below 8.

At Ft. Washington the past few years and at this years Nationals it's the same story. A few PSA 8's way over SMR. Nothing else graded. there are plenty of raw cards around in low grade condition. There are also a lot of fakes for sale so beware. Some of these fakes will fool you unless you really know your stuff.

    Hope this helps.

  • recently sold on ebay 1934 goudey #9 psa 7 $85.04

    1938 GOUDEY FRANK PYTLAK PSA EX-5 $72.09

basically i was just wondering if there was more intrest in the 38s lately

but after reading the posts i will keep my 34 goudey cards to

    ty all
  • I agree completely with GoSoxBoSox. If you or anyone
else wants $85 for PSA 7 '34 Goudeys, please give me
a call. I'll buy them all day long. You are right though
about the higher prices for the '38s and it's like everyone
has already said - lower production and they come up
    for sale much less frequently.
I had initial interest in collecting the '38 set but quickly
lost that interest when it became too difficult to locate
and purchase cards at reasonable prices.
