General Question About Trading "rules"

The last time I did any significant trading was many years ago when I was a kid and had time to focus on it- i.e., pre EBay, pre work days. Nowadays, I don’t trade very often, mainly b/c people don’t seem to have the cards I want- and also b/c I’m leery of sending but not receiving. Not to mention, I’d usually rather have $ to buy the cards I want. In any case, I was wondering what general rules people use for trading- i.e., autos for autos exclusively? anything else? I ask b/c here’s the type of offer I’m getting lately- and the prospective traders seem a tad too eager (maybe that’s common?) to rush and complete the trade:

This (MY cards):
>
> 2003 Upper Deck SPX Young Stars Hank Blalock AUTO
> (#454/1295)
> 2000 Bowman Aubrey Huff #AH AUTO

> 2003 Donruss Signatures Legends of Summer Brooks
> Robinson #LS-9 AUTO
> 2003 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia Brandon Webb
> ROOKIE
> #190 (#0258/1500)
>

Let's see, they're offering you inserts, low end rookies, and regular issues from the 1980's for your hot rookies and HOF autos. I'd be eager too!
    Always looking for Vladimir Guerrero!!!

The beginnings of a CU reference list: Dkiger, Dewey, autobilia, ljmaya, cardjunkie, hamptonfan2002

Bad traders: back to being just Winsarc
  • I already knew that giant. I was inquiring if that's "standard practice" these days. When I used to trade (granted many years ago b4 the autos/gu'ed/#ed hype), people would at least offer "fair" trades. Lately, I've been getting "Hi, I'm Joe- used car salesman by day- do I have a deal for YOU"- insert trade offer below. Then when I don't reply right away- or I try to politely say "I take autos for autos only", they just reply w/more "used car saleman" type of offers. It's offers like these that keep me selling on EBay rather than bother making efforts to trade.
  • THERE IS NO STANDARD PRACTICE. AS LONG AS BOTH
    PARTIES AGREE, ANYTHING GOES.
    i ain't often right
    but I've never been wrong
it seldom turns out the way
    it does in the song
    once in a while
    you get shown the light
    in the strangest of places
if you look at it right
  • true vinny- it just seems that lately (my first 'real' attempt to trade more), i get the "used car sales" type of offers...as if traders think i'll give up a blalock auto for a 1980 non rc which is worth maybe $2.

You mean is it common that people make idiotic offers? Yes.

  • Giantsfan-- you don't have to copy and paste everything you reply to, we can see all of the replies when we open the thread.....
I'd challenge you to a battle of wits...... but you appear unarmed

    "Stop talking, negotiating,
Your feeble attempts at world peace
    Give me a %#@*ing break
    Need worldwide genocide, planetary suicide
And when the whole damn world is dead
    there's your %#@*ing peace"
  • That way people know which reply I'm replying to.
