Hockey HOF Set Registry Strategy

This question goes out to raym8, aro13, and goodriddance189 since you guys are the only folks actively registering cards for this set.

I understand that Ray isn't really going after the set...just some high grade rookies.

For the other guy's, are you going after this set? If so, what is your strategy? Do you have min grade requirements?

I ask because as you all know, there simply aren't any truly "vintage" cards of some of these player, and for those that have cards they are rarely any existing in high grade.

So are you guys willing to complete this in lower grade's for the players with vintage cards? What are your plans for the Fred Whitcroft's and Harry trihey's of the world (players with no vintage cards that I know of)?

Just wondering.

  • i just noticed you knocked me into 3rd or 4th place, congrats. im semi-actively working on this set, but i only collect PSA 8 or 9 cards, so my options for picking up older players (pre war) arent very good. it will be a slow process, but i plan on having an overall set rating of 2.0 by early november (i have about 8-10 i still havent added, just waiting for the right time to make a good jump). also, with my limited funds, i rarely go after cards that dont fit in to one of my other sets (my "type" collection, rookie set, etc). i would rather go slow and maintain a high gpa than buy a bunch of low grade cards that i dont particularly need.

as for adding vintage guys, just remember that they dont have to be vintage cards. high grade modern cards of vintage players pop up every once in awhile (stuff like 1991 pro set, the original 6 set from 92, Esso all stars from 1988, and the various UD legends sets from the past few years). also, remember that multiplayer league leader cards can be used- take this card for ecample, it can be used as an Orr and/or an Esposito.

hope this helps, glad to have some more hockey guys around.

    -Will
  • by the way, i have several psa 8-9 HOFers that i dont need, if youre looking for anything in particular let me know. i wouldnt mind getting your 71 Topps Clarke 8, or your 70 OPC Tony Esposito 8.....i need both for my type set.
  • I'm expecting a 100 card submission back within the next 2 weeks of high grade cards for this set. Included are about 50 cards from the rare 1983 HOF Post Cards set (actually, they're standard sized cards). These cards are of players that don't have "vintage" hockey cards like Whitcroft and Trihey.

Also in that lot are a bunch of modern high grade HOFers rookie cards. So I'll be making a huge leap on the registry.

I have just about every HOFer. I just need to submit the cards, but have been debating it for the vintage cards because of condition. For example, I have a couple dozen C55's and C56's that will probably grade 1's and 2's. Same for some V-145's, Ice Kings and others.

I'd like to upgrade some of them but they just aren't around as you know. Also, PSA doesn't grade 1939-40 OPC's or Beehives because they're too big. I have about 10 HOFers from the OPC and 3-5 from the Beehive set.

The next issue I have is I'd like to register my Hockey HOF Coaches, Referee's, and Executives. Do you think PSA would add them to this set or would I have to request a new one. I have about 100 cards for such a set and realize I'd be the only registrant.

Is nice to have issues like this to keep me up at night. Such troubles.

The best strategy is, of course, to buy the HoFer's that I'm selling.

Kidding aside, when I was kinda-sorta working on this set, I was going for 9's on modern cards, 7's and 8's on postwar vintage and basically 2's and up on prewar stuff. I'd like to eventually upgrade the 2's and 3's I have, but with those sets I don't really mind having low-grade cards in sets because high-grade stuff often doesn't exist.

Also, I'm not a big fan of using the Esso cards or other newer releases featuring vintage players, unless those players had no cards picturing them while they were active. I probably wouldn't include an SP Authentic Bobby Orr Sign of the Times card in a Hall of Fame set - even though I'd love to have the card - but something like a Frank Brimsek card from one of the recent goalie-themed releases would be good. The '55-56 Parkhurst and '60-61 Topps sets also have some All-Time Great cards of players who either don't have regular cards or whose prewar cards would be cost prohibitive, if not impossible, in high-grade. Lastly, the card-sized Hall of Fame issues are going to have to be the way to go for many players. I used to look out for them on eBay. They do come up and they're not too terribly expensive, you just have to be sure you're getting the right size and series.

    Been there, done that.

I have the complete 1983 set. I only plan to use these cards for the players that have NO other alternative vintage cards. It's better than never having anything.

I was not really trying to complete the set until I realized I had close to 75% of the cards already and will be close to 40% after my latest submission results. I prefer the pre-war in any grade. I just bought a Eddie Shore V129 in PSA 3 condition. I cannot imagine there are that many of that card. For the modern (post 1951 cards) I prefer to have rookies in grades 6 and up. For some of the players the 60-61 Topps set is the only set you will find their cards. Plus, I am working on a few other sets which the cards neatly fit into this set (C56, 51-52 Parkhurst etc.)
I will not consider any recent sets for cards (esso, Hall of Fame sets) unless that is the only way of obtaining a card of that player.
  • Here's a list of the players I can't seem to find a vintage card of and am willing to turn to alternative sets. Do any of you know of vintages sets were i can find any of these guys?

My taste for vintage has improved dramatically over the past few years, and while I was not actively persuing the
set at first, I've started to become more interested in it. I still only collect rookie cards, so this makes the set even
    more challenging.

I'd like to see the people who are persuing this set post scans of their cards to the registry. To me, half the
fun in collecting the cards is being able to see how other collectors are doing, and being able to view the scans,
especially of the older cards, many of which I've never seen before.

  • I'll post mine for you Ray when I get a chance. Do you know if you can post a scan for a player/card that you haven't registered a card on yet?

I'd like to post scans of my raw cards even though there not encapsulated yet.

    I'll have to try it.

    Tom,

You can only post scans of the cards that you have registered.
PSA will not allow you to post scans of raw cards.

    Best,
    Ray
  • hey tom, congrats on getting over 60%....i had delusions of grandeur thinking that i could add about 12 more psa 8/9's and jump into first...guess not. glad to finally be getting some more hockey guys on the registry, competition is always good.

    question
do you have any idea if psa will be grading the bee-hive photo's? i have no idea what the size is.
are they close to the turkey reds?
maybe someone can post the checklists for the bee-hive photos.

  • jackstraw,

PSA doesn't grade these beehives. They don't have big enough holders just yet. I have Hextall, Broda, Ching Johnson,Frank Brimsek, Charlie Conacher, and Terry Sawchuk beehives. They also don't grade the 1939 or 1940 OPC cards just yet. The OPC will fit in the new holder coming by December, but I don't think the beehives will fit these.

It's unfortunate because these grading limitations hold me back from getting about 30 cards onto the registry. They're sweet cards.

    goodriddance189,

Thanks. I have a card of everyone in the HOF set, I just have to get them all graded. I have so many C55, C56, V-145, Ice Kings, and 1930's OPC cards that would grade 1's and 2's that I just don't waste my time. I'd rather upgrade first. For the cards from '51 and up I'm holding off for high grade cards from now on. Preferably rookies.

  • Here are some 1939 and 1940 OPC cards. I love these cards. They measure 5" x 7".

This card is the rookie of Hall of Famer Bill Cowley.

  • My Red Horner is a 1933 Ice King.

The funny part about the 1939 and 1940 OPC's is there are a lot of cards of player in suits. It looks like some find of a family portrait or something. I even have one of a player in a tuxedo.

    good rid,
i am probably going to boston show this weekend? if i do i probably could find you a mint copy for around 10 bucks. the goalies from the set go for around 7 to 10 and the players you can get a bit cheaper depending on who they are> are you looking for the 5 x7 copy also? and what else the boston shows draws all the canadian dealers. do you have the 93 canadians o pee chee fan fest card ? i am sure i can find one of them too. if i don't go i will sell you that one next week. or better yet fly in for the weekendimage it's not that far from texas.

Gillies rookie is 1975-76 OPC card #199. Gillies selection was indeed curious but the Hockey Hall of Fame is not exactly full of all household names.
