From the latest Pop reports:
1999.......PGCS69 1286, PCGS70 1, TOTAL 1409
...............NGC 69 2204, NGC 70 161, TOTAL 2380
2000......PCGS69 1254, PCGS70 1, TOTAL 1378
..............NGC 69 735, NGC 70 134, TOTAL 882
2001......PCGS69 896, PCGS70 0, TOTAL 979
..............NGC 69 812, NGC70 144, TOTAL 974
2002.....PCGS69 1243, PCGS70 6, TOTAL 1291
.............NGC 69 1335, NGC70 181, TOTAL 1534
2003.....PCGS69 1712, PCGS70 11, TOTAL 1736
.............NGC 69 2708, NGC70 340, TOTAL 3050
I find this population data on Lincoln proofs VERY interesting for the following reasons:
1. Large number of proof 70's by NGC compared to PCGS.
2. Large number of NGC submissions so far this year compared to prior years and compared to PCGS.
3. If you were to look at the population numbers prior to 1999 for both services you would see much less in submissions.
Does this data indicate that modern current date proof coins, particularly those sets including the state quarters are being broken up and sent in for slabbing so that they can be included in the registries? Are more people now spending $11 or $12 a proof coin for grading on top of the cost of their proof sets in order to slab? Are dealers seeing a true market for PR69DCAM proofs? I think the answers to these questions are YES. What do you think? Steve

I think you are correct in your assumptions. But I must add one comment re the NGC graded coins. I think they are being submitted by the scum of our hobby. The crooked dealers, and the people who offer coins on TV. NO ONE who collects lincolns seriously would go near NGC for any reason. For all you guys who care to flame me, I suggest you send me a check for all the @#$% I still have in their holders instead. I also believe PCGS is not certifying 70's because of the guaranty. JMHO however.
