Museum of Sports History, who is this guy

Anyone know who this is? He doesn't allow you to view his sets on the registry. He just bumped me on my 76 Topps FB set from 1st to 2nd. Let me know.

I have sold a couple of items to him over the last few months. He is based in Illinois, and seems to be assembling top sets from all types of cards. Looks to be a major player, as he is putting in some very high bids for some very high end cards.

  • He sent me an e-mail not long ago wanting to upgrade his Maravich cards with mine, giving me his trade conditions. I made him a counteroffer, sent several e-mails and offered to buy a PSA 9 Maravich rookie card outright. He never responded to any of my e-mails. Perfectly ok, but he could have at least had the courtesy to respond. Not much for chit-chat, but he's got deep pockets and is coming on strong.

  • I was wondering about this also. He is the top dog in both 1985 and 1986 topps football, came out of nowhere and crushed. I though he might be the guy featured in smr with top hoops hof rookie cards set............

    Rob,

His first name is John (Withholding last name).

He purchased my 1985 Topps Football set from me last year.

Like Pinchdatail stated he is very hard to get in touch with. I personally had better luck with his secretary.

  • You'll see a lot of them in the future - very solid people.
Good for Football Collecting. Ummmm - now I wonder where they could be getting all the great football from?!?!

I find it ironic that his "museum" does not allow visitors image. He's not the guy in the SMR article, that's Kevin Roberson.

No such details will spoil my plans...
  • aro13aro13 Posts: 1,961 ✭✭✭
Joe - No it is not Kevin Roberson but there is quite a battle going on between these two on some basketball sets.
  • I believe I heard his intention is to open an actual "museum" sometime in the future in Chicago to showcase his huge collection of sportscards and memorabilia. I have sold to him several times and while he is hard to reach by email, it has always been a good experience. If he needs to add a card to his collection he is very hard to beat, his purchases on ebay alone have easily exceeded the 7 figure mark by my rough estimate!

He also owns the 2001 UD Legendary Cuts graded sets...which is one of the most amazing efforts ever in this hobby regardless of year.

Damn! Based on his completion % he needs 4 cards to complete the 2001 Cuts set.
There are 19 cuts autographs numbered out of 10 or less in the set.
Among those cards only 4 have not been graded by PSA
    Red Ruffing /5
    Frankie Frisch /3
    Harvey Haddix /4
    George Sisler /1

    Thats amazing!

If I'm not mistaken the Legendary Cuts set was listed under a different name for a long time, something Investments. And it also included a Burleigh Grimes auto #10/18 that was graded a 10. I used to own that card before selling it to a major collector whose name I longer see on ebay. It was raw when I had it. Nice to know I managed to keep it in good (or better) condition.

I noticed this guy's name on several of the football sets I've been looking at. He posted the first 73 FB set that was over 20% complete (actually over 99%). I don't know if his collection is a Museum, but from what we can see it's pretty nice.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

I would like to know who this is too because I'm trying to compete in the '86 topps football and I won't have a chance with this guy. His pockets seem endless. hmm...maybe we should try putting out the bat sign and waiting. lol

Not only are the cards hard to pull (heck some could still be sitting in packs)...but then to also have them in high grade as well.

    vgfc,
    1974 Topps W. Buchanon Grade: PSA 9 MINT Price: $149.00 ????

I paid $21 for this same card. PSA 9 1974 Fb commons average $25 on Ebay.

Your site has more of a personal collector look than a business front end.

    You asked.

  • Now in the new SMR KR is quoted as saying he has the top 1986 football set on the registry(he has only Elway in psa 10 and Young, Rice among other's in 10), you sure it isn't him Joe......This Museum is the top dog in this year right now.... I sure wish he didn't have his set hidden, I might just hide mine so when i catch him in it, he will be clueless to what i have...................NHLfightguy (just viewed Boston Bruins best of dvd and Jay Miller did beat Dave Brown and Criag Berube in same night at the old Spectrum).....
  • I know that KR sold some of his 80s gems off, he may have kept the rookies.
Definetley not the same person. Jeremy
    Jeremy
  • I wonder If KR swung some kinda mega deal with this Museum guy for some his 80's football gems..... I hope one of the super sleuths in here can crack this case, just who is this museum of sports guy????????????
  • I'm thinking it's some big wheel, who has a middle man do all his dealings. Probally will never crack this case, could be the grassy knoll of the PSA set registry........NHLfightguy

    Really, really strange.
    He has a 1974 Basketball set with a GPA of 7.00 and a 99%ish completion %.
The population report shows that about 1/3 of the set doesn't have any 7's graded. I also can't imagine him amassing a 7 set.
Working on 1969 through 1975 Basketball.
  • achteyachtey Posts: 304 ✭✭✭
Yeah, this guy has to have some really REALLY deep pockets. And I also don't see why anyone would hide their set. Isn't the point to let others see and be able to brag it up when they do. image I don't see the competition being that strong. hmm....strange.

  • Carew4me,

Thanks for the feedback, I am very comfortable with constructive criticism, that being said here is my reply...

    vgfc,

1974 Topps W. Buchanon Grade: PSA 9 MINT Price: $149.00 ???? (74 PSA 9 rookies have been climbing fast recently)

I paid $21 for this same card. PSA 9 1974 Fb commons average $25 on Ebay. (Ebay is without a doubt the cheapest way to pick up cards at times, but I could go into a long list of auctions on Ebay where cards also went way way over their presumed market value due to the bidding process where two or more collectors smack each other around until one pays a crazy price in the end. If you check many if not most other football card sites (I won't mention names), you will find the asking prices are consistently much higher than Ebay. As with anything, if you don't like the price for something you simply don't have to buy it. Also, some folks also don't want to wait around for a year to have the card they need come up on ebay, off ebay sites provide another outlet to pick up rare high end cards...but there is a price to be paid. One final note, there is no shilling at off ebay sites)

Your site has more of a personal collector look than a business front end. (This is actually on purpose, I have received a lot of feedback from people who like this format vs. the cold look of most sites...people really like the spinning footballs...go figure, I guess it's a matter of personal taste and preferences)

You asked. (I did ask, and do appreciate all feedback...good or bad)

    Thanks

Has anybody got any new leads on this one. Museum is still king in 1986 topps football among many other's. I've ruled out KR as a possible suspect. I'm back on the case. Any new leads out there or does this one go to the cold case file!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I am not sure who Museum of Sports History is, but he must have one of the largest modern collections in the hobby. Is there anyone with more PSA graded modern cards?
  • NHLfightguyNHLfightguy Posts: 525 ✭✭
He or she sure is the king of modern ball cards. many of the sets listed he's the only player in the freakin mix. I wonder if he submits most of his own stuff. I wish he or she had pictures of some of his registered cards. I wonder what 10's he has in 85 and 86 topps football. Seems like he or she doesn't allow anyone to see the sets, just another mystery in said case. You might see me at the national with notebook snooping around to crack this case.....

    Museum of Sports History=Dmitri Young????

    FINISHED 12/8/2008!!!

  • This guy has impressed me as a "Davalillo" type but of mostly new stuff and without the personality.
Like him or not (and I have had nothing but positive imteractions with him), agree with him or not, you at least knew who he was and where he stood. He dominates new stuff where I am surprised that people would spend the grading fees. He is showing up in the 70's and 80's but not with sets that seem unbeatable (5.23 GPA in '74 & and 7.4 GPA in '73). Seems he is willing to spend the grading fees but there are a lot of us who have nicer cards from those years.
He may win this year and maybe next, but in time people will start to spend money on those sets and reel him in. I see in '85, Chris Renaud is third. Now that is a guy that will finish the set and do it right. Long term, Fuzz puts a C on CR to win. He will have to change his strategy to be long term sucsessful. In the vintage years and in the sets where there are specialists (like Carlos in 72), his only chance is to buy out the #1 spot and so far he has not been a factor.
    Fuzz
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.
  • aro13aro13 Posts: 1,961 ✭✭✭
Mostly new stuff? Not so certain about that. He (they? she?) has a complete 1948 Bowman basketball set with a GPA of 8.04 which is remarkable for that set. Plus complete 57-58 Topps Basketball and 61-62 Fleer sets which are in the top 3 on the registry. His basketball Hall of Fame rookie set and top 50 NBA players set are both phenomenal.
  • kobykoby Posts: 1,699 ✭✭
I agree with aro13. Museum of SPorts History has very impressive vintage sets to go along with the modern stuff. Still it is with the newer stuff that he is untouchable. The closest rival is perhaps D. Bryant, but Museum of Sports History has a much more well-rounded collection.
  • i believe it's a guy (or group of investors) in Chicago, who plan on opening a Sports Card Museum. this is what i was told last year when i inquired about him
  • He recently sold some real nice 01 Legendary cuts including a Ruth. My only experience with him was once asking the reserve on an auction for a Mel Ott cut 1/2 and I got a response about 4 days after it ended.

  • sixdartsixdart Posts: 821 ✭✭
He will be putting a sports card museum together - no date/deadline established. He travels quite often so communicating with him is difficult. From what I understand, it's just one person.

The weird thing is his inconsistent bidding pattern. You'll never know when he'll show up on EBAY? I have been very agressive with the 1985 Topps Football ( #2 PSA Registry entry now), however he'll pay $30-$60 for PSA 9 commons. He snipes with high max bids to insure winning, yet he sometimes no shows on PSA 9 1/1s and 1/2s that he definitely needs.

I hope that Chris Renaud waits to finish the set? image

Rob (VGFC) prices he cards according to the market, now if he couls post some '85 Topps Football?? image
  • NHLfightguyNHLfightguy Posts: 525 ✭✭
Is his ebay name the Museum of Sports History ???? I know I always see the ebay handle chrisallen or something like that rake in the 85 topps football psa 9 and 10's I wonder if that is one of his ebay id's. Look for the NHLfightguy to make a move in both my 85 and 86 topps football sets. I love them sets.....
  • sixdartsixdart Posts: 821 ✭✭
Yes, he is Museum of Sports History on EBAY. It appears the Chris C Allen has been building his set before I started this year. He is steady with his bids, but is starting to become more competitive.
  • His name is John Mosh. He's a transaction lawyer in Florida. He is a buyer who sell's his lesser-grade cards as he upgrades through ebay.

My current theory is that it's more than one person putting together said collection under the name of the Museum Of Sports History. Could this be some kind of group of big shot low profile collectors. Will they be at the National in some form, probally sending in buyers who are working for the Museum Of Sports History. I think they may have middlemen or something. Could this be a Fogel and Branca joint venture, or as one keen observer said Dimitri Young may have a hand in this outfit. Maybe it's a big 3 venture. This just keeps getting stranger. I need to go to bed and sleep on this......

Could it possibley be DSL private collection????????

If a buyer wants to remain anonymous, I'm sure he doesn't appreciate his name being mentioned on a public message board...jay
  • jmullenjmullen Posts: 159
I thought of that. But, his name is not anonymous. When you can click on his set registry and get his email address ... the email address is something like John.Mosh@

Therefore, John gave up his anonimity when he put that email on the board.

    Jeff

  • jmullenjmullen Posts: 159
Acutally, that makes sense. Maybe I just assumed it was Mosh. When I've spoken to him on the phone about basketball cards, I just talk to John.

thats crap...if your not willing to show your cards then why are doing a registry...who are registering with and for what overall purpose???? I like the registery cause it gives you a place to show completeness and SCANS of the cards for everyone to enjoy....this is not just a peeing contest

    my rant ---loth
  • You must admit that while building a high quality run of sets, it isn't always best to show your hand.

If you think you have 1986 Football PSA 9 or 10 that would fit into the MOSH collection, please email me.

I can also promise you that MOSH's strategy is sound, with a clear vision of the future.
They are also the epitomy of what is right with the hobby.

I think MOSH's primary reason for using the Set Registry is for tracking purposes. With multiple people involved in their operation, it makes sense to have a common meeting place that they can update their acquisitions and track what they still need or don't need.

Top notch buyer's, and personally I would pay to visit their "museum" if and when it opens to the public...
