Thanks to Davalillo!!!

Just wanted to post a heartfelt thanks to Jim (Davalillo) Crandell for allowing myself, Jeff (LuxuryWines) and Tom (GoSoxBoSox) to take a look at his amazing set collection. We spent the better part of the last 4 hours talking sports, talking cards, talking shows, talking registry - and just plain enjoying the card conversations that are foreign to most people.

Since I'm sure that I'm the first of the 3 to make it back home - I wanted to be the first to say THANKS to Jim!!! Love him or hate him, Jim has a multi sport collection like I could only dream about. It was also nice to get to know more about both Tom and Jeff at the same time.

Next week we meet at Charlie Merkel's place!!!image

Thanks Frank--enjoyed showing you Jeff and Tom my collection--also enjoyed the dinner and conversation.

No reason to hate anybody(except King Kellogg of course)--this is only for fun and investment.

    Vic,

You obviously missed the post about King Kellogg and Wait Until It Starts To Smell wanting to go to a card show and hold hands.
  • I can describe what it was like to shuffle through Davilillo collection in just two words. Sensory overload. Frank, Jeff and I were like three year old children at the Magic Kingdom for the first time. Paralyzed, not knowing what to get our hands on first. After five minutes with these cards you become de-sensitized to just how great each card actually is because your sitting amongst many thousands of them.

A person can only be left speechless after viewing a collection of such breath and depth. This collection goes well beyond his ~100 sets on the registry. You can find almost any set (sports or other) in NM condition. Except, of course, Kellogg's sets image.

This collection belongs in a museum. A big museum. Your achievement to this point is truly tremendous Jim. Congrats and I can't wait to see it as your goals are reached.

    Thanks again.

    Tom,

Thank you. It was great meeting you. You have a true appreciation of vintage cards--and you hate the Kellogg's crap--a true kindrid spirit.
You have to have a goal--100 psa 8 or better vintage sets is a lot but it looks achievable....and if my son doesn't want it someday it may well be in a museum.

    Well...

I spent part of last evening telling my wife, "but Jim's wife lets him have a 100 set PSA graded collection, why can't I???". So far - no dice...

Although she's offered up the hallway linen closet if I want to display some of my current collection - oh, and I have to clean it out and paint it first!!! Negotiations are ongoing...

Jim - again... truly amazing... I've never seen a dealer with an inventory like yours. Flipping through T-206's, Diamond Kings, Playballs, Leafs, Bowmans, Topps, Dan-Dee's, Red Hearts, Nu-Scoops, Wonder Bread's, Kahn's, Johnstons Cookies, Bazookas and on and on and most sets complete or near complete!!!

Thanks again for opening up your collection to us and allowing us to pick your brains for a few hours.

  • I'm rather disappointed in this board as of late. If you dislike someone that's fine, but I personally don't think Kellogg's cards are crap. What's crap to one is treasure to another. We all like different things, please save the personal attacks for recess or after school, oh wait, we're all supposed to be adults here. Please act like it.
  • dbj44,

About Kellogg's? Lighten-up. Maybe Davalillo wouldn't have called them crap if it didn't get such a rise out of certain people on this board. We just have a little fun since the Kellogg's collectors seem to be the most sensitive collectors we've seen.

It starting to seem to me like Kellogg's collectors know they're crap too, but don't want to admit they know it to the rest of us.

Anyway, who really cares if anyone thinks they're crap as long as the collector enjoys them? What that saying....beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

  • Gosox,
The cards are cheesy, of course, and I certainly realize they don't have the monetary value that other cards have, but the 1970 Kellogg set is one of the greatest looking sets of all time I think. Later on Kelloggs gets crazy with the silly borders and extreme colors and I don't dig them that much, but, It can be said that certain prewar sets alsp have ugly color schemes, like Diamond stars and even dare I say it, the Goudey sets. ::gasp:: LOL Yes, the pastels in the Goudey sets aren't all that attractive to me at least.

I just wish the beefs would be handled between the parties involved and not here on the boards so we all have to listen to the drivel. That being said I have nothing against Davalillo or King Kellogg, they both contribute to the hobby in different ways. Good day to you all. Thanks for reading my rant.
  • Dav - you're right, the Kellogg's are all Krap. They're not worthy of being in your masterpiece collection (but somehow they got there didn't they?). It's best that you sell your '70 set off, and free yourself from the plague referred to as Kellogg's.

    dbj77,

To your first point....like I said before...beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I certainly don't take offense to you not enjoying '34 Goudey's. That's more for me image

I have to huddle with Zardoz who on this board professes his loyalty to the Kellogg's cause(and probably will again if he sees this),
but in reality is my partner in the anti-Kellogg movement. But you have shown enough good instincts that you can be on the Board of Directors of the anti-Kellogg movement.

Strong buyer of 1970 Kelloggs Football & 1971 Kelloggs Baseball and Football. Please help me find cards!
I have a few hundred extra PSA graded 1971 Kellogg's cards. E-mail for price list. Looking for 1970 Topps Supers in PSA 9 too.

  • << <i>`Face it, those Goudeys would be a lot prettier if they had a plastic coating. You are just jealous. >>

    hah...maybe?

Actually I don't like Kelloggs because I have a lot of 1970's and 1971's which I think are very attractive cards. I've had them as long as I can remember. But, they're all cracked....and it makes me sick. Thus, I'm anti-Kellogg's.

So basically I'm just a sore loser image

  • Boys,Boys,Boys, Boys....

Can't we all just play nicely here ... That does it ! I have had enough!

Frank (FB) , I am sorry these other children can not follow your example and play nicely quite frankly I am ashamed of them but you have been a good boy not calling the other children nasty names and focusing on the true meaning of life. Baseball cards and how to find ways to get our wives to allow us to buy more of them ..... You are to be commended. Because you have been a good boy I will make you a very nice deal on a 1964 Topps Giants Koufax PSA 8 email me tommorow afternoon.......

Murcer Fan - God Save the King? Don't you know that the monoarchy as a relevant form of government has been dead for over 100+ years? For your faux pas you must sell me all your regional obscure issues for 50% of SCD book for the relevant PSA grade.

Vic - God Save the queen? You need some serious help please consult with PSA Satan and find out what his medication is .....

Chuck- I can understand how it could take you a while to get the incorrectly joke . I see you are a Michigan fan . You have obviously been beating your head against the wall (especially after the trauma you have received the second year in a row against Iowa). The good news is you were probably not in Iowa and did not have to witness it in person this year .... ( Luxury feels your pain and understands he is a Red Sox/Patriots fan).

AlanAllen- Interesting name .... You got the joke right congratulations ... You are a very insightful and intelligent guy. Luxury has a question for you "Ishi no ue ni mo san nen" it is a Zen Buddhist koan in Japanese which loosely translated means - Sit on a rock for three years ... Could you figure out for Luxury why anyone would want to do this? .... and what the true meaning of the koan is ....It has been bothering him since his Asian religion course he took in college his senior year in 1986.

DBJ- Pastels? I am very worried ... It sounds like you are spending way to much time with the MRS. at Sherwin Williams ... You need to buy at least 3 pre 1968 PSA 8 or better cards. Repeat this prescription at least 3-4 times per day until the word "pastels " is no longer in your vocabulary... If you are not married and are using the word pastels I am afraid we must use much more drastic measures....

GemMInt man - Where have you been ? Luxury has completed at least 2 Kellogg sets and 2 64 Topps Giants sets and yet no Kool Aid rocker or Jolly Greeen giant. You have obviously not been paying attention. Please remove yourself from your self induced hypnotic 3D stare; wake up and become a contributing member to this board .

Davalilo -Jim so you seek to have an audience with the most exalted, wise , all powerful benevolent dicator Zardoz! Be careful when you invoke his name there are dark mysterious forces at work
    here .....

GoSOxBoSOX- Tom Jealousy and Envy are allowed here but only if used properly ... For instance you can say - Man that guy is lucky I would sell my (use any vital body organ) to own his set. - But being jealous because your cards have cracks is not acceptable .... You are to go to bed early tommorow night with no watching TV. That is right young man no Pedro and no Red SOx..... Also I do not want you looking at your 34 Goudey's while you are suppposed to be in your room sleeping . All 3 sets will be taken away from you for 1 week..... ...

Seriously we had a geat time ... It was a great day four guys drooling over baseball cards.. Spending time talking about the hobby we love trading insights. .. Tom hit the nail right on the head ... Jim has so much more that he has not had graded that his raw material would be very impressive as a collection all by itself its depth and breadth are amazing....Just a really fun day which I hope we can find some way to repeat in the near future......

But is it really always spelled incorrectly? Surely it is occasionally spelled differently, such as "incorectly." I think I'll have to consult my Asian religion guru in the morning image

Luxury is benvolent dictator who has complete control of his enviorment and ability to buy baseball cards whenever he wants .... Except when his wife is around then for some reason the power structure does a 180 degree swing.......

He will rescind your punishment you may watch Pedro and the Red Sox provided WHEN THE SOX WIN you will use your many connections to obtain 4 tickets for the NJ collectors crew, to see the beloved Sox play the Evil Empire . The cost of the tickets will be split 4 ways. You can either purchase tickets for the prefabricated piece of cement in a section of New York (The Bronx ) that Yankee fans so richly deserve or you can buy them for the most beautiful living piece of baseball history that resides next to Lansdowne Street . The choice is yours ....
