John -- A ton of PSA 8 from the 1970s and 1980s really don't do much better. Basically what this means for more of the market is that many dealers will hold back submitting until the supply dries up a little and prices go back to "normal". In the interim period, only collectors will continue to submit.

I've had a tough time moving a number of relatively rare Schmidt PSA 8 and PSA 9 cards. Not that they don't move -- but I am often not making my grading fees back from them. Though it doesn't have a huge effect in the long run -- I can guarantee that there are a significant number of Schmidt issues whereby I will pretty much be the only submitter in the world.

(Yes -- I realize that implies my collection goals are not necessarily rational...)
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

    Aconte-

Last time I checked....SGC 92s are the equiv to a PSA 8.5. Also...note that all of the cards DID sell. In addition these were sold in lot form and are a year younger than the 1976's.

    Basilone,

The Psa lot was sold as one lot, with 9's, and with pictures. Did the Sgc lot have photos? They
do not now. I think it is easier to sell as a lot. Also, the Psa lot was even advertised on the Psa
buy, sell, and trade board where a forum member bought the lot. And I do think the Sgc
cards should of been sold as a lot. Because if you wanted 2 or 3 cards you were looking at
$4-$5 shipping for them. That is $2.66 a piece.

But I think we are splitting hairs here. I'll admit that Sgc 1976 commons are not a big seller.
But if you think $2.32 a piece for 77 graded commons is considered any better you got to be kidding.

And I won't argue with you that these types of cards would do better in Psa holders.

if it wasn't for me the 96's would have sold for a buck. i made an offer of 200 for all 71 96's but he never responded? oh well i won 7 1.00 92's and paid 9.00 for shipping? not sure i understand why but oh well>sgc offers an alternative to psa and will always be that but i wouldn't be surprised if they get someone over there with enough testies to make some changes. they need to stop listening to the sky is falling on psa any day now theory on their boards and do something to change.

Make these cards 1976 or 1977 Topps PSA graded football and they would be going well over SMR...lol

In general football from the 70-80s sells better than baseball. Plus SGC 92 normally doesnt even sell as well as a solid PSA 8, even though I have crossed some 92's to PSA 9 in the past.

I see quality bought a lot of the cards. I was going to email the guy and offer him $2.50
a card. I think the guy was dumb for putting up cards like that as individual items with
a $1.00 opening. He was asking to get killed on the cards.

If I offered him $2.50 a card and the 77's sold for $2.32 a card does that mean Sgc is
a stronger brand? Or does that mean I'd probably have 71 cards that I would lose
    cash on some day. HeeHee...

  • SGC does need to get their act in gear. They do have a good product, but their marketing is abysmal.

JasP24 - Interesting point. The 76 topps PSA 9 football on ebay seems to sell a whole lot better than the PSA 9 baseball from the same year. Are there that many people putting together graded football card sets?

After 1976 does anything sell well in baseball if it is graded less than a 9? For 76 it seems the PSA 9's are selling but moving a "common" in PSA 8 looks pretty difficult.

I think football is just slowly taking over...For example, look at 1984-1986 rookies like McGwire,Clemens, Puckett, Mattingly in PSA 9 vs. the football RC's Marino, Elway, Moon, Rice. There is almost no comparison.

Here are the most recent ebay sales of PSA 9's:
    1984 Donruss Mattingly 18.50
    1985 Topps Puckett 15.85
    1985 Topps McGwire 74.50
    1985 Fleer Clemens 76.00

    1984 Topps Marino 98.50
    1984 Topps Elway 97.00
    1985 Topps Moon 39.99
    1986 Topps Rice 308.99

Its pretty easy to see, that football rules the 70's, 80's and 90's...And with the prices of the vintage legends like Johnny Unitas still under $1,000 for a PSA 8, its only a matter of time before football is THE sport of choice. Not only on TV, but in card collecting as well...

I'm just glad I got in on the ground floor.

  • The answer is simple, they are SGC graded. While i have some SGC in my collection they just don't sell as well as PSA.

Somebody should send a link to BMW, i would be interested to hear his 'spin" on this.

Here is MW's post on the other board:

    "John,

To reiterate aconte's response on the other forum, if you think that $2.33 each for 81 PSA graded 1977 Topps cards is an improvement, you'd better look for a job where you can count pennies and nickels from 9 to 5.

    Link to PSA auction

Based on prices from both PSA and SGC, I'd say that's simply the current market value. There's nothing particularly unusual about the prices you've reported. PSA graded cards often sell in the exact same range. "

Just got lucky,I guess. It's rare that 80 PSA 8 commons sell for This much

    Or this much

The best 1980 PSA 8 auction was for a Tigers team card. The thing went for $20.

Usually 3.75 to $4 + ship for singles.Occasionally, however, there is that $6 to $8 PSA 8 on ebay but I'd cut the right deal for bulk off auction just to move 100+ of my duplicates.

BTW-Jay,awesome deal on those 77s and too bad those 76 SGCs didn't even get touched.I was watching them for a bit and forgot about them until now. It's shocking to see the possibility of nabbing that many nice cards get passed on.

    Is it the grade,the holder?
    What???

Nevertheless, nice cards and a nice set commons or not.
