THIS IS THE WORST MAIL DAY EVER!!!

I received two packages in todays mail........the first one was four 1979 Topps Football rack packs that the guy just droped in a bubble mailer and sent them with no other protection, and there are bends/dings on the top two or three corner cards of every rack pack!!! The second package i received had sixteen PSA 8 and 9 1972 Topps Hockey cards inside and 13 of the 16 holders are cracked on the bottom right side!!! Out of the over 1500 packages ive ever received ive NEVER had anything that arrived damaged and now i get two in the same day!

I think im going to be sick.imageimage

When I mail single cards, I wrap the individual card in a layer of bubble wrap the whole way around, tape it so it's pretty solid, then put it in a bubble mailer. Is that kosher? I don't just throw it in there, but if everyone expects cardboard then I'll get some. What's the protocol here?
  • Paul,
Hate to hear about the damaged cards. I always place cards I ship between to pieces of cardbaord and then tape securely, probably a pain to get out but I do not know if I have ever had any damaged during shipping.
I do have a few PSA 8 Topps Hockey, drop me your email , mine is Nuyauwka@aol.com, might have some you need?
If it's worth doing..It's worth overdoing!!
  • Extra bubble wrap is not bad best case is cardboard however.I prefer shipping in boxes when i can, when i use bubble mailers depending on value of card i always use thick cardboard high $ cards get bubble wrap then cardboard and sometimes a extra smaller bubble mailer in side big 1. Maybe im over protecting but better safe then sorry and if look at my feedback 1 thing that stands out is a lot of great packaging comments.

I ship in a video sized box with a couple of layers of protection. I then put a layer of masking tape around the box so nobody can get in without leaving a trace. It costs a little more...but I have never had a card damaged.

  • When i sell on ebay i charge $4.50, i have had a few people complain about the amount i charge but EVERYTHING is sent out well packaged, insured and in a box even if its only a $8.00 PSA 7 common it all gets shipped the same and ive had no complaints when people receive there cards.

  • Bubble-wrap envelopes are a horrible way to mail cards, no matter how much padding there is. The only graded cards I've ever received cracked came in bubble-wrap envelopes.

As for me, I always surround them with bubble-wrap material and then put inside a sturdy video-sized box.

Next question: I charge 2.50, with no add'l charge if you win extra cards, so I just about break even. However those video boxes the USPS distributes requires Priority. Many of the cards I sell are 10 to 30 bucks, nothing that's Earth shattering. If you were the bidder on a $10 card, would you rather have me charge the 2.50 for the wrapped card in a bubble mailer, or have me charge the exact cost for the USPS video sized one (probably 4.50)? This is a serious question...I've never suffered breakage or had someone complain about how my item was packaged, and I've sold to several board members, but if everyone prefers paying the extra for the packaging then I'll go ahead and charge it.
  • I do not have a problem with bubble mailers. I've received 1000s of individual cards via bubble mailer, and only one has arrived damaged - only the slab is cracked, the card is in perfect condition. I'd rather continue receiving cards in bubble mailers at $1 - $3 s&h, than pay $4+ for priority boxed shipping. It's just not worth it to me. I'll take my chances, but I think my results so far don't justify paying more for boxed, priority shipping. An extra two dollars per card would add up over the long run.

On a related note, if a seller is charging $4+ to ship a card, I always factor that in to my bid for cards in the $5 -$50 range - over that, it's insignificant.

I would rather pay $2-2.50 shipping and have someone pack it properly in a bubble envelope. For cards over $100...I do not mind paying the extra for priority shipping in a box.

  • See, even John agrees with me.

  • Hey guys, interesting stuff, but...ummmm... don't these "mail days" threads belong over on the BS&T board? Just thinking out loud....
  • Why? Im not buying, selling or trading anything here! Ive seen people post things of this sort on this board before so i didn't know it was a problem. Relax a little you will live longer.

  • I don't mind a small excess in charge if I see it come back to me in packaging. However, $5.00 for used tissues in a Good N'Plenty box makes my blood boil. It's blatant disrespect.

    S,
  • so far, i've only had 2 cards arrive cracked- scratched actually (1- 1 1/2")- both from dslsports- both in bubble envelopes. however, dsl promptly replaced the cards w/o problem. as for raw cards, i ship mine in a penny sleeve and toploader in a padded envelope...that seems sufficient to me and so far no one's complained about cards being damaged...and i'd rather charge $2 for shipping than charge someone $5 to ship a $5-20 card. for graded cards, i place them in a plastic bag made for psa/bgs cards, tape cardboard around the card, bubble wrap it, and then put it in a padded envelope...again no one's complained about damaged holders and i only charge $3 to ship graded cards...

as for satan's good and plenty box story, i bought someone's personal collection (and no, it wasn't one of those 'my dad died/boyfriend left me...here's my 'hot' 88 donruss set'- it was a relatively good collection in great condition)...only problem is the person shipped it in a 5000 count box which was then set in a cardboard box that had obviously been well used- as evidenced by the various oil (hopefully it was oil) stains on the cardboard box, the numerous tears/rips/markings, etc. and of course it contained tissue paper- hopefully not used. when you consider a cardboard box costs less than $5, it seems like the seller could've bought one...on top of that, it was sent parcel post- 4 glorious weeks later, i got the collection. fortunately the cards weren't damaged.

Is it so freaking hard to mail the damn cards in a little more protection than just a bubble envelope. Does it really take that much more time? NO!!!!!

When I mail out my cards, they go in between cardboard, then into a bubble envelope inside ANOTHER bubble envelope. I charge $2.00! THE CARDS ARRIVE FINE! This is for lower value PSA cards. For higher value, I would ship in a priority box.

Cmon people! I would say that 75% of the packages I received of PSA cards lately from ebay from high positive feedback dealers have just been dumped in a bubble envelope - the stupid small ones no less - and a few arrived damaged.

    It makes me sick...

I have taken up sending the offending sellers a followup email, saying, "Gee, nice card, thank God it arrived ok. Do you think you could spend a few more pennies and wrap the damn thing securely next time?!?!?"

Sorry for venting, but this is becoming ridiculous lately,
