? on PCGS WTC ground zero recovery coins

I know these are not popular here but I have a few questions:

a) I have noticed that there are two variations: first is gem uncirculated with no grades and has Collectors Universe in the back; second has PCGS and grade with PCGS hologram in the back. What's the difference? Why aren't they all graded?

b) Those that are PCGS graded do not have a coin number, certification number nor bar code. Does this mean that they are not in the PCGS pop reports and databases?

TIA for any info.

  • I don't have much to do with the 911 commerative coins. However, I can give you a heads-up regarding their databases(eg; The coin registry). I still have a 1882-O O/S (weak) that STILL, after many emails to PCGS' feedback center, hasn't been accepted by their systems manager as a variety in the Morgan Dollar set registry; therefore, denial everytime I try to post it to my set registry. It's been 3 months or more, and still, no change. It baffles me! They grade it yet refuse to recognize it...image
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

The first ones were produced by Collectors Universe not PCGS. Collectors Universe does not grade coins and so the coins were only listed as "Gem Uncirculated" and the coin and series numbers are not on the label. Later PCGS got into the act and they did grade the coins. At first PCGS only slabbed 2001 dated gold and silver US Eagles but later they started grading all kinds of other ground zero coins. I would expect that the CU coins are not in the daabase but PCGS coins probably are.

How could they be in the database if there is no coin and certification number on the slab? All they have is the PCGS grade and the ground zero recovery description.

That's what i get for answering without going back and taking another look at the slab in question. I thought I remembered them as having the coin and series numbers. They do have a serial number and barode on the back though and they might be tracable in the DB that way. Hmmm at least the one I have does. The one you posted does not. Just what I need, another variety.

Thanks for the info. Now I know that some of the WTC PCGS graded coins have bar codes in the back of the insert which would make possible to track and have info in the PCGS databases. image
