Grade this bust half......

Here's a nice bust half 1830 (small"o" variety) that I've had for quite awhile. I don't collect these but it is so pretty I thought I would show it.image

I'll stick my head out. MS64. I don't think there is any real wear. The flattening on the hair is probably strike related? Nice looking coin.

This coin is impossible to grade from an image. You really need to swivel the coin to check for highpoint luster breaks and hairlines.

I almost agree with Placid: BB to MS65

I'll narrow it down even further:

EF+ value at the low end, MS63 at the high.

I edited my post as I can't really tell from this image. It does appear to have been molested and re-toned at some point.

Agreed, the surfaces look "something", as lightly cleaned at some point and rather attractively retoned.

There sure is a nice strike, a lot of detail, and positive eye appeal. First approximation: Unc details, net AU55 (was going to say 53 but it's too pretty to be only a 53, imo)

margin of error now +/- 5 points.

  • these things are very hard to grade in person. and the photo is good but still hard to see.

    I call it au55 image
may the force be with you.

I originally posted I felt there was just a bit of rub here and there. Tough to tell without rocking the coin around. I used the word molested as that covers a wide area. And also I don't like that word "molested."image

  • That is a darn good looking coin and I thank you for sharing. I'll agree with many before me, that for an accurate grade, one would have to have it "up close and personal". I'll say it should certainly go AU-55, with a fair chance of MS-62/3. I can sure see why you chose to keep that in your collection!!

  • Just a touch of wear, but a very nice coin. AU50 or 55
  • I'm not a "professional" grader, but I think some of you guys are pretty "damn" good, considering you only have the pic's to go by. This coin is in the "raw" state. When I bought this coin a few years ago from a small local coin dealer it was in a PCI gold label AU-53 holder.image

Since I collect Walkers I will probably sell this coin. I still have the label, (see attachment), but not the plastic.image
  • It is pretty, but the coin does look to have been heavily cleaned and retoned.

virtually au details, altered surfaces, value as low-end xf.

(unless the luster looks much better in-hand)

btw, i think it's o-103, which is the most common 1830 small-0, imo.

  • No doubt cleaned looks to be about CH.XF detail but most likely has no real luster left.
