Big money coins

1. Anyone have an idea how many differant types of coins have sold for over a $1,000,000. I only know of three 1933 $20, 1913 Nicks, and I believe an 1804 Sivler Dollar.

2. Does anyone know if a there has ever been a coin that has a mintage in the 1000's or more, the series did make it into circulation, and yet one of them sell for over $500,000

thanks

  • For number 1, that`s about all that I`m aware of. The 3 that you mentioned that is. For number 2, the 1927 - D St. Gaudians $20 comes to mind. Coinfacts states that the mintage is 180,000 but, the prices for them are in the 6 digits for a MS example. That`s if you could find one. That is since it was part of the melt down as part of our gold reserves.

    1933 St Gaudens $20
1907 Extremely High Relief St Gaudens $20 (pattern)
    1804 Class I Silver $1
    1804 Class III Silver $I
    1870-S $1
    1885 Trade $1
    1866 No Motto $1 (pattern)

Coins that might sell for One million if they were sold today:
    1849 Liberty $20
    1822 Capped Bust $5
    1870-S $3
    1794 $1 Specimen
    1861(-O) Confederate Half Dollar
    1877 Half Union $50 (pattern)
    1870-S Half Dime
    Judd-1776 (pattern)
    1964 Peace $1
    1861 $20 Pacquet Reverse

There are coins with reported mintages of over 1000 that sell for this amount, but it is because survival rates are far less than mintages suggest, or because reported mintage is wrong. Examples would be 1822 half eagle and 1933 double eagle.

Nap: you forgot the 1913 nickel. Also, I don't think the 1866 no motto dollar has ever sold for more than $1M. And we shouldn't forget the Brasher Doubloon.

I'd bet these would bring $1mm or more:

    Finest known 1894-S Dime
    Finest known 1927-D $20
A select few Brashers( Andy L. which ones?)

    And, oh, so close

    1854-S $5
    1870-S Half Dime

    Collecting since 1976.

    Thanks for the corrections TDN.

Some other coins that are million dollar maybes:
    Immune Columbia gold
1894-S Liberty Head Dime (one sold for awfully close to the million dollar mark)
Large proof or specimen territorial gold pieces (a Kellogg piece was advertised at this price, I don't think it sold though)
1793 Specimen? Chain cent "The Coin"

Is the Smithsonian having a sale to help raise money for the $87 Billion we need to help the Iraquies?? image

I don't think anyone else has either of those listed coins, so there's not much chance that we'll ever know what they would sell for.
