PCGS vs NGC? What about another?

Hi folks - I really enjoyed your comparisons between graders but.......How about ANACS? I have
all of my Morgans in their holders and am satisfied with their service. I did this because of the
VAM craze with Morgans and ANACS prints out all the juicy attributes on the magic label. Have I
been strolling down the wrong path on this one? What will I get better from the other two?

I bust coins out of their holders and put them in albums.

Anacs is cool. They suck in moderns, but the Morgans I've handled seem to be pretty close to NGC. I also like their slabs. They are the easiest to image the coin of any of the real grading services.

I am always more concerned about the coin in the slab than the TPG.

They are GENERALLY looser than PCGS or NGC, but I have seen undergraded coins in ANACS holders... and overgraded...

I say select the coin together with the holder.

For Morgans in Mint State grades, ANACS allows more marks and less lustre than PCGS.

They are too loose when giving out the PL and DMPL designation; heavy metal flow lines appear to be OK with them and they often allow some frost in the fields, whereas PCGS is much more strict.

With circulated coins they are highly accurate up to Very Good, but from there it's a huge spin of the wheel. My experience has been that anything graded VF will cross or crack out at least 5 points lower at PCGS. In particular, they give the VF35 designation far too liberally. At PCGS VF35s have lustre; at ANACS they typically don't. My experience has also been that ANACS XF40s are almost always PCGS VF35s. But for some reason, I've had very good luck crossing ANACS XF45 coins to PCGS at XF45. In the AU range, ANACS is virtually always one tick too high. They seem to allow a LOT more scuffs and bagginess, and a lot less eye appeal.

As with anything else in life, everyone has the right to spend their coin money they way they choose. With infrequent exceptions, I choose to spend mine on PCGS-graded coins.

    When in doubt, don't.
  • I have never bought a coin, because it is in one slab or another. When i buy a coin sight unseen, I make sure that the return policy is something I can live with.

If the coin does not cut the grade that I bought it at, I am obliged to return it.

I must say though, that PCGS on resale is like Harley - Davidson vs Honda, Seem to get more moolah in a PCGS tomb!

AND I have seen undergraded coins in NGC holders... and overgraded...

Knowing which are which IS very helpful when buying coins, There are some bargains out there, but you HAVE to learn how to grade coins, LOOK at the coins and buy the nice ones. You might not get upgrades on all your coins, maybe on only a very few, but if you selectively buy nice COINS (not plastic) in the end you'll have a nice COIN collection. If you're a dealer buying for re-sale, there are probably other factors that come into play, but if you're a collector, that's what its all about - buying nice Coins.

here's another way to look at it: they're about as inconsistent at the other services.
