Yeah, the coin's not very nice, but check out his never-ending stack of twenties.

Maybe to pass off to somebody else as genuine.

    or to fill that hole

I would rather use a real 1901-P as a hole filler than some whizzed, scratchy looking slug of a fake coin. Hole filling is an abomination. Imagine if a fine art collector bought only art from the masters; rembrandt, renoir, Monet, Van Gogh etc..only to place a dogs playing poker with a velvet backdrop painting on his wall as a "wall filler" until that authentic rare piece could be found.

Makes my stomach turn, collectors who use ugly or fake "hole fillers" should be outed and subjected to real jail time for their desecration of the hobby!image

I agree ARCO! Actually the best of all possible worlds would be, to have a AG 1901 (but still a clear date) and a reverse where the mintmark would be, smooth as a river pebble, to serve as a hole filler. This because most with a 1901-S ought to have it in a reputable slab, so as to serve for authenticity, should they or their heirs need to sell one day. Of course one then should put in writing that the "01-S" in the album is no such a thing, should you die and the relatives be accused of fraudulent behavior when they sell off your "stuff".

Of course you can't help it if you're gone, and whomever crumples up that piece of paper and still tries to pull a fast one. Remember the dateless Flying Eagle cent on eBay, selling for much more than it ought to because it "could be" an 1856.
  • I'd rather just have jidmick sell me his real 01 S quarter [hint hint!!!!]

Well... suppose the buyer wants to turn it around as real?

  • Jeremy hits the nail on the head. I've seen a number of rarities like the 1793 half cent go up for auction on eBay that were origianlly bought as electrotypes. The seller even used the same pics.

They were the auctions that said "Just found this in my grandmother's attic and I don't know anything about coins" etc.

  • Some folks collect counterfeit coins.....maybe it's worth $150 to one of those collectors?

I'd rather have a hole in all my Barber quarters than a piece of junk like this...
