Weekend Poll: What do you think of the new Coin Values CW insert?

I received my first Coin Values insert, and I like it! "Values", in a word, makes more sense than "Trends" did. I also liked the feature articles on $3 gold coins and grading Morgans. Good job, Coin World!

I don't subscribe to Coin World, but I am looking forward to seeing the new insert.

  • I seem to have misundersood the new CW Values publication. I was under the impression this was to be a seperate monthly magazine, not an insert. Looks like I've missed the first one.

My understanding is that Coin Values will be a monthly insert in CW and sold separately as a standalone monthly publication.

Subscribers receive it with the first issue of each month (bagged together with the paper) starting with the first October issue but they will sell it separately also.

I liked it. Clearly they need the ads and the articles to add enough size to make it worth publishing separately. I don't know how accurate their prices are, but no published price guide is accurate. They recently added a lot more MS and PR grades, especially in moderns, in order to increase the value to readers.

I like it because it covers a lot of grades as well as every US coin, so if I'm looking at something outside of what I'm familiar with it gives me a good idea of what the price should be. Everything in one magazine.

What they could really benefit from is the kind of articles the Greysheet publishes where they do a in-depth analysis of different series. The article they ran on $3 golds this time is a step in that direction.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • IMHO, CW has the Morgans way overvalued. I think most of us Morgan collectors would agree that Morgan silver dollars are almost completely worthless and should not be collected in great quantity. image

As far as pricing accuracy, it probably depends on the series. The pricing for rare date gold given in Trends/Coin Values is probably a reasonable approximation for the retail price. Of course, there are numerous exceptions and pricing inconsistencies. It is not perfect.

I am thinking of letting my CW subscription lapse (yes, I'll miss all those great deals from Coast-to-Coast) and initiating a new subscription to Coin Values.
