Is this an unattractive, cleaned coin...

that should have been body bagged, or am I missing something?

Can't tell if it has hairlines, they must not be too bad because it's holdered. Bady bag might be kinda harsh, they cut the early stuff a little more slack, probably a seated or barber quarter that looked like that would get bagged (unless it was a key date)

Obviously dipped, but great detail. For that kind of money I'd want [more] original surfaces though.

it should NOT be bodybaged. HOWEVER, the slab should state "cleaned" on it.

to bodybag a au 1803 dime for "cleaning" would be absurd, since probably every one of them's been cleaned.

BIG price, but I like the coin, including the die cracks on the reverse.

It looks like it has been dipped and not all the stains came out and it has retoned. It doesn't look much worse than any other slabbed AU material.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    What dorkkarl said.

Draped Bust/H.E. silver in the small denominations is tough stuff.

That's a nice coin, despite any cleaning and/or scuffiness.

I am not a fan of this coin, but in all fairness, it is rare and not a bad example. Originals are tough and this one looks as if it were dipped to get the last possible mile out of an AU grade. If it were left alone and graded either a 45 or 50, it would be a more desirable coin. Just my thoughts from the cheap seats...

  • I like this coin yes it may have been abrasivly cleaned and certainly dipped but its got great detail and in no way deserves a bag.
