I'm ready to slab some gold coins

Jack had some gold, and I've been dragging my heels about getting it slabbed. (I know, I know, I should be selling it now)

Where should I send it? ANACS's fees are cheap by comparison: $10 per coin for economy (still cheap at $15 per coin for 5-day turnaround), whereas PCGS is $30 per coin and NGC $20-24 per coin. If I went with PCGS or NGC rather than ANACS, would the difference in submission fees be made up in the sales price of the coin?

I'm frugal, and I want to make the most money for my family!

I see nothing wrong with going the ANACS route, personally.

But if you use their Economy service, I hope you're patient.

You could scrub George Washington's nose off Mount Rushmore with a fingernail file, in the time it takes for an ANACS Economy submission to be graded and sent back to you...

It's hard to predict how much more the coins would bring at auction in a PCGS or NGC holder, really. Might be significantly more, might not be.

  • personally, i would start with anacs and be very patient. hopefully you re not in a hurry. submitting the coins would not hurt financially and would give you a starting ground as to their condition and worth. at that time you would have a starting point for considering submisson to another service

CoinDaughter: What type of gold coins are you interested ingetting slabbed? I have recently seen some special discount offers from some of the grading services for gold coins.

You may wish to check out the web sites for PCGS, NGC and ANACS to see what promotions they are currently offering. Also check out the numismatic written literature -- i.e. magazines.

Coindaughter, the answers to your questions depend upon the type and quality of the coins.

If they are circulated or lower grade mint state pieces, ANACS is probably fine. If, on the other hand, they are higher grade mint state examples, the higher price you might get for them in NGC or PCGS holders, should offset the higher grading fees.
  • If you have not had much experience with gold go ANACS

they will NET grade as long as authentic and no PVC contamination

nothing would frustrate me more than sending a pile of coins to PCGS/NGC and a couple months later getting a pile of bodybagged coins back.

  • Most of the gold coins were sold to him as BU. Some were sold as AU. They are all real pretty coins to my very very untrainted eye. I'm just terrified of finding another counterfeit!!

I will consider your opinions. Thank youi!

If you go ANACS economy, expect at least 3 months turn-around time. And they could be extremely harsh with your coins, too, as far as grading is concerned.

  • I strongly disagree that you should be selling it now. If you had sold off your stocks after only a one year rise in the market, you would have lost eight more years of rise. The same applies to the gold market. I would first send them to PCGS. Then if you have bodybags, send them to ANACS. image

Unfortunately (for PCGS), I would probably send the gold coins to NGC. Despite that I prefer the look of the coin in the PCGS holder better, I think that NGC will more likely give you the better grade.
