Just Curious????

I am just wondering what are the ages and professions of the board members here? Some of the sets you guys have completed are AMAZING!!!!!!! Are these sets you have had for years and years that you had graded? Or are these sets you have built card by card on EBAY?

Again I am just curious, maybe jealous of the deep pockets.

I joined PSA about 5 or 6 months ago. Set registry caught my eye about 3 months ago so I'm a newcomer to this gig and still need to get lots graded. The primary registry set I'm working at the moment is . 1934 Goudey. I have another set of Goudey's that represent some of my many duplicates. The secondary sets I work once in a while are here.

I'm 41 and a mild mannered accountant. I had my compete collection of 1969 OPC Hockey from when I was a kid....some even graded out to PSA 8's but mostly PSA 6's and 7's....pretty amazing considering I used to play with them as a boy and I have a little brother who didn't find my hiding places....had to upgrade many from ebay though.

Collecting NFL HOF RC's shown in my link...I have purchased about 75% of them from ebay already graded. Sent in about 15% raw to be graded, 5% from dealer sites and about 5% crossovers from SGC/GAI/BVG. I started this collection about 5 years ago, so I got in early enough that I didnt have to break the bank like I would have to today for most of the cards I collect.

Isnt easy competing with some of the "Big Dogs" on my military salary...lol..Makes it fun though..

    42. Advertising photographer in L.A. Basically I help convince people to buy things they don't need while convincing myself to buy cards I don't need. Instant karma at its best.

Collected heavily in the early/mid 70's, then sold everything when I discovered girls and surfboards and cameras and cars. 4 years ago I decided to look at this thing called ebay, and its been all downhill since. Initially intended to just get a few old favorite sets ('70 & '71 Topps, '53 Bowman, etc), then rebuild the old collection. Suffice to say the old collection has been surpassed by now, and I haven't finished yet. But of course I can quit anytime I want to.
Built most of them card by card, but have bought some sets (ebay, mastro, etc) and then upgraded card by card. Rarely, if ever, buy ungraded on ebay anymore.

I got involved with PSA after I busted my first vintage pack of 1970 Baseball that had a MINT Pete Rose and a Nm-Mt mays in the same pack, I almost sold the cards raw to a dealer at the nationals 5 years ago for only 75.00 total. But had them graded at the show and got my First MINT 9. Im making a few graded sets, Mainly the 1971-72 BK set for now.

I now focus my non-collecting energy on public service and am currently running unopposed for re-election as county supervisor.

Age - 53 I have collected cards since 1957 under the tutelage of the legendary collector Bill Broderick ( my 7th and 8th grade history teacher) in upstate NY. He taught us that you had 2 piles of cards - ones you flipped and ones you collected. I remember my old Captain Kangaroo type green pants with the pockets (front and rear) bulging with flipped cards after a great toppsies win. Hated FB cards and non sports we ripped up.

Stopped collecting in 1965. Have 1952 thru 1965 sets and then some. Almost finished with the 1961 set graded (#12) and on my way to finishing the 1959 set (#7). Have a nice 1962 set which I will not waste my time grading (PSA is just too tough) and will leave raw, but will send in the 1964 an 1965 sets to be graded next year. Just sent in the mid series 1957 to grade at Ft Washington.

For those of you old enough to ever have heard of Mr. Broderick, he was a die hard NY Giants fan, who made us listen to Russ Hodges' call of Bobby Thompson's HR to win the NL pennant in 1951. Well, he found some various unopened packs (including 1952) in a cellar of a candy store in 1963. The reason they were in the cellar was becuz once FB cards came out, nobody bought baseball cards anymore. All the kids in the class got a few to open up. They were 5 cent packs and I pulled a 1952 Mays and a 1957 Mays. He pulled a 1952 Mantle #311 and he traded me for the 2 Mays. Years later, I saw him at a show and he wanted to know if I wanted to trade the Mantle for the Mays cards and of course I said "no". I still have the Mantle, as well as both Mays which I bought from him prior to his passing.

I work in NYS government as a management specialist and collect post war Lionel trains as well.

Great thread...nice to know a little about y'all.

    I'm 36 but very immature.

As far as jobs are concerned, right now I'm trying to keep a moving business I started from going under while also doing some part time jobs such as market research and translations. I used to be a consultant, so right now, I'm reveling in the freedom to be poor.

I collected as a kid and really have my Dad to thank for continuing the collection while I did silly stuff like go to school, got married, moved to Mexico, moved back, got divorced, got an MBA, got a job, lost a job, got married again. You know the silly stuff.

Anyway, I got back into it earlier this year when I tried to liquidate my Dad's collection (I considered it his not mine after all the additions he'd done to it.) Now, it's become mine again and I'm fortunate to have found the people on these boards to help counsel me on the trials and tribulations of collecting in the PSA dominated collectibles world. As a result, I haven't lost too much money but I don't have much to spend on them.

After a quick spurt of buying cards, both graded and raw on eBay, I've cut back and just trade cards with some the the great trading groups that are out there (OldCardTraders.com, Vintage Card Traders). It's helped me expand my 60's collections without busting the bank. Since condition isn't normally an issue, I can buy lots on eBay without fear of the cards not being up to standard (since there is no standard.) I did drop about $500 at a show here in Houston on my favorite set, the 62 Topps. Of those cards, about 10 of them (out of 150 or so) I submitted to get graded. It's how I got my PSA 8 Early Wynn. I think probably the only star I'm going to be able to buy raw and submit from that set. That is the most exciting feeling in the world. I expect to sell my 62 complete set just in time to send my kids who haven't been conceived yet off to college. Since I'm at under 10% complete, I figure I better hurry up (I'm at 65% raw after 6 months of collecting).

Okay, maybe a little too much information.
Call me crazy, but I collect 62 Topps BB.

Without King Kellogg and Hubcap, I'd be extremely depressed right now in light of the average age here. Suffice to say, I was around with King Kellogg when the pyramids were built.

I am dealing in cards and coins full time now as frankly, I have no choice. The demand for a 50++ senior manager in the technology field is, well let's just say that a buffalo hunter, stagecoach driver, or zeppelin repairman is in far greater demand in the workplace. I am forced to play with cards and coins, go to Las Vegas, and speculate in the market. Oh, the woes of being "unemployed".
