How much negative feedback on ebay is too much

ScarsdaleCoinScarsdaleCoin Posts: 5,331 ✭✭✭✭✭
Had a very interesting talk to tonight at coin club meeting about sellers and the ebay feedback ratings... so my question is.....what % or how many feedbacks would be too many .....or if I seller had x number that would stop you from bidding on him....whats too much 98% 94% 10 neg or 20 negs...I know a seller might have 50 sales vs another seller with 4000 that is why I ask it both ways as a number and as a %

  • I'd say 97% positives is OK.

1 negative will keep me from doing business with someone on ebay if the neg was justified.

  • Depends on the type of neg. I generally don't deal with anyone with less than a 98% positive feedback but if they have a heavy neg. number of no pay or no return I don't bother.

I always go through and read the negitives. If there are nasty responces to the negs, I won't buy no matter what! So sometimes one is too many, other times a higher percent doesn't bother me, you have to do a little research there is no right or wrong answer here.

More than 2 per hundred or more than 2 in the past month. Of course it depends what the negatives say.

It depends on what they say... suppose you got 5 from one person who couldn't be pleased? If they are excessive, there's a problem... but if they're not excessive, then it depends on content.

    Catch22,

You must do very little buying on eBay. BTW, exactly how does one determine if a neg is "justified"?

Well, If we take the Forum as a reference, then 40% negative seems about average .

  • I don't think you can go by a # or a %. You need to review EACH seller individually and read EACH and EVERY negative, and as has been said, the seller's response to the neg speaks a lot about HIS character.

Some buyers can be very difficult to please and/or deal with...they leave a neg, but you can usually "read between the lines" as a decent, upstanding seller with integrity will go out of his/her way to make things right and will not resort to name calling...this you can tell by their response to the neg.

Case in point: This seller had a 98.8% ...79 transactions...3 negs (1 unique user) HOWEVER upon further review, this was discovered:

    BUYER(339): Oct-23-02 12:49:11 PST
Complaint : Same as above=DAMAGED most coin's silver only.described as BU
Response by SELLER(79) - Original Mint-wrapped coins delivered as described w/ no visible sign of damage
    BUYER(339): Oct-23-02 12:49:11 PST
Complaint : coin's described as BU,most were DAMAGED non gradeabl.
Response by SELLER(79)- Buyer had option to return UNOPENED rolls--Chose to open all three.
    BUYER(339): Oct-23-02 12:49:11 PST
Complaint : Same as above=Damaged most coin's,not BU as described
Response by SELLER(79)- Impossible for seller to have ascertained condition of US Mint-wrapped
    coins.

All of the other feedbacks were positive, so my point is if you merely look at #'s or %'s, you may have passed on this seller and IMO this is one of those where you could "read between the lines" and possibly tell that the BUYER in question may be one of the more difficult and the seller is o.k.

Content of Negative feedback is more important the how many (percentage wise). Some of the best deals on eBay are from sellers with maybe 50 or 60+ Negatives (but out of hundreds of transactions). I look for the time frame of the feedback too.

So many bidders skip right past anyone showing sprinkles of red on their feedback page it allows bargains to ocassionally peek through.

I've bought a lot of coins on ebay (about 600)

and i had a 100% POSITIVE rating ...i slipped to 98% when i decided to sell about 2 dozen duplicate/upgrades...

one moron bid and won 5 auctions ...and after 6 weeks of non payment i did what anyone else would do...i gave him negative feedback.

well I'll tell you! NOW I GET A RESPONSE ! .... he responded with 5 negatives of his own (retaliation) said i never emailed him...

blah , blah , blah .....truth of the matter was ...he just had an over active mouse button/finger..

any way my 100% positive feed back is now 98. sumthin image
  • 99% or better and I don't usually give it much thought as a buyer, scan over the feedback to see what would cause the negatives ~ anything lower, I read every negative feedback the seller has and go from there. Cliche alert: "consider the source".

I currently have a 99.2% (most from sales), 9 NEGATIVES, 3 NEUTRALS, 1100 or so positives. Wow, 9 negatives you say? All from different users? Here's a few of the most recent negatives and neutrals...

I hope I have contributed some form of entertainment to this thread image

I am either ripping off an occasional buyer here and there or I am getting the shaft from flakely bidders that do not pay per the clearly defined auction terms. So what did you remember, the 1100+ positives or the 11 po'd people who think I am a "punk", "an ass to deal with", or a "non-shipping seller"?

Man, I can relate to that. In my auctions it says no credit cards FIVE different places, including five point red caps at both the top and the bottom, and I say it again in the notices I send out. I still get bidders paying by credit card.

  • Once I put a camera on ebay for sale. I put a BUY IT NOW on it...Well it sold, then the person who bought it said they did not want it anylonger..it made me sick...I have not put anything on ebay since...and the buyer even gave me a negative feedback...Now you tell me who was wronged...You can not always go by negative feedbacks, there are some real jerks on ebay...That none sale cost me $15 which ebay charged for the ad...It just inferiated me.

    interesting because I have 950 + 860 unique users 5 neutrals and 2 negs...
    the negs were frustrating because

    1. Fellow won 2 coins, then only wanted to pay $1 for envelope shipping...told me he would neg me if I charge him shipping....tried to change price on the winning lots saying he should have a discount since he won two of my auctions.... after he got the coins he posted a negative
    posted the following complaint

Complaint : BEWARE... Will leave Negative for you, even if you leave neutral about him.
Follow-up by jimnet - payed $13 S/I for two coins. You only paid $8.61 and you didn't insure as agreed

    2. again a ANACS holder clearly marked on the holder Corr....without the buyer even calling me he put up the following Complaint : coin was advertised as light corr but was moderate corr, could not return coin.

So my ? is ....do you think someone would think Im a bad guy? judging by the posts here at the board...sound like a few people would not buy from me....
Response by immagic - NOT TRUE THE COIN CLEARLY MARKED ON HOLDER CORR BUYER NEVER EVEN CONTACTED ME !
